As March 2012. Now they said 160 million yesterday.

If you want to play the fool, do it better.

Who is they? Sony didn't say anything.

Continue to pretend you don't understand and play this little game. I've got more important things to do than deal with some 33 years old console fanboy like you. Bye.

Edit : found the right gif lol

There is nothing to understand, these figures were suspiciously not reported on a financial report, that means he could be rounding or you know not reliable. Maybe the fan in you just can't come to grips with that. He can say this on a podcast but can't report it to his shareholders? You ofcourse don't find this odd because you're a fan. I can only imagine if Bill Gates said the Xbox 360 sold 170 million on a podcast how you all would act.

As previously reported here is the math given official reports from Sony:

Sony reported PS2 shipped 155.1M as of March 2012 https://www.neogaf.com/threads/sony-q2-fy13-ps3-2-0-m.707013/

Sony reported PS3 shipped 63.9M as of March 2012 https://www.neogaf.com/threads/sony-q2-fy13-ps3-2-0-m.707013/

Sony combined PS2 and PS3 together as Computer Entertainment System and PSP + PSV as Portable Entertainment System for FY 2012 (April 2012 to March 2013) http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdata_hardware_e.html" class="link">https://web.archive.org/web/20130921081219/http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdata_hardware_e.html

PS2+PS3 shipped 16.5M for the 2012 FY http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdata_ces_sale_e.html" class="link">https://web.archive.org/web/20131014055001/http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdata_ces_sale_e.html

Sony announced PS3 surpassed 80M on November 2 2013 https://www.ign.com/articles/2013/11/06/ps3-sells-over-80-million-units-with-4332-games-released

Sony reported PS3 shipped 1.1M + 2.0M in Q2 + Q3 2013 https://www.neogaf.com/threads/sony-q2-fy13-ps3-2-0-m.707013/

Tally up 1.1M + 2.0M + 63.9M = 67M

PS3 cannot have passed 80M before November 2, 2013, meaning PS3's maximum shipment LTD as of September 2013 must be less than 80M.

79.9M - 67M = 12.9M as the absolute most PS3 could have shipped in FY 2012

16.5M - 12.9M = 3.6M left over for PS2

3.6M + 155.1M = 158.7M minimum.

We have it at 158.7 million because that is the minimum it could be at given what we know. It is likely Jim Ryan is rounding to 160 million. He could be rounding up or rounding down. We don't know one way or the other.

If Sony releases an official statement or we get something like the image Shawn Layden posted of the PSP with the exact number of units produced I will update our PS2 figures to match.

As far as accusing me being an Xbox fanboy. Sure, Halo is my favorite franchise. But I enjoy games from the big 3 - Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo. I'm just playing Xbox and PlayStation games on PC now, and use my Switch to play Nintendo games. Alan Wake 2 and God of War (2018) are 2 of my favorite games I've played over the last couple of years, and I am looking forward to playing God of War Ragnarök once it releases on PC.

When it comes to my work I try my best to leave any sort of biases out. Especially when it comes to doing the estimates. I take the data we collect, which is then extrapolated to get worldwide estimates. When more data becomes available - ie. quarterly reports from Sony and Nintendo that reveal shipment figures - we always adjust our estimates to be as accurate as possible.

You and the team do a fantastic job, this is incredibly difficult to estimate the sell through/sold to consumers figures. You make a mistake and adjust accordingly. That is quite reasonable and very understandable. No need to let a 23 year old PS warrior get under your skin. Dude is mad that you dare question a company that reports "official" figures in casual podcast instead of the financial reports where lying would be a crime. Yes that's the company that should be beyond approach 😆.

No reason to defend yourself Trunks, we know you do a stellar job! You have never given any reasons to question your integrity here.

I think it's great that he replied to me, because even though I've known about this site for a long time, I don't come here that often. You people know them but that is not really the case for me.

I was thinking again and came up with one possible scenario where the final PS2 number is at exact 160.00mil: In it's last year of production, i.e. April 1, 2012 - March 31, 2013, the PS2 shipped a minimum of 3.6mil (and a maximum of 6.8mil), meaning that it wouldn't have reached it's natural death already and would have sold another few millions in the coming years, but Sony had to kill off the PS2 in early 2013 because in the same year (in Nov) the PS4 was released and they still had to support the PS3, PSVita and even the PSP - there was simply no capacity to support a 5th (dying) console. So, Sony made a compromise: They looked at the PS2 numbers by end of 2012, saw that it is approaching 160mil and decided that in their very last production order (Jan 2013) to round out the number to exactly 160.00mil. They would have no problem to sell-through this "excessive" production because as mentinoed before, the PS2 was to be killed off prematurely anyways.

While the above is a compelling story, at the same time I heavily doubt it because, if you round out the numbers (i.e. produce) to exactly 160.00mil why would you not report on it? If you don't report on it, then why you had to round it out in the first place? If you don't care to report this round number of 160mil then you wouldn't have to care at all and just leave the production (and shipped) numbers at whatever uneven number they are at the time of your last production order, be it 158.6mil, 158.9 mil, 192.2mil or whatever number, you wouldn't have to go the extra mile to round it out. Especially, as Sony had a press release for the 150mil mark and officially released the number of the 155mil mark (which is still on Sony's Business Data & Sales section on their website), surely, they would have reported the 160mil mark as well, if they had reached it.

So King Switch needs 160.1 million , let’s go!

Hey, @trunkswd Just from curiosity, what was the reason and how did you get to the former number used on the site for years, for the PS2 - 157.68M
