I honestly think split screen is a great feature and I don't think it should go away. I've had many great moments with friends and family that have come by and we had great bonding moments by playing splitscreen/co-op games.

It's great to have that option there cause I see a lot of value in it in bringing people closer. And you can have those moments without paying $300-500 for a system plus the subscription service plus buying the game itself just to play with a friend.

Conceptually that would have been cool for Wii U. I'm sure a couple of games did it but the Wii U with the shitty hardware, name, api and more prevented from becoming a more standard idea. 3 Gamepads as our split screen.I guess Switch has that ability in tabletop mode and 3 friends with a Switch. if Sony Portal was a more capable device, conceptually the idea of PS5 splitting 4 player in 3 Portals and the TV screen be kinda cool.

It was pretty cool on Dreamcast with the formations in football games showing on the VMU.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Some of my best gaming memories involves split screen play. But, the reality is that it's just not a feature that many people make use of anymore. It's been 20 years since I've used it in any game other than Mario Kart and It Takes Two. Games like those will always need it, and I assume they will always have it. Though I suppose I would have said the same thing about Halo until they ditched it for Halo 5.

Anyway, if it's a question is do I want it or do I not want it, of course I want it. But, the real question is do I want it at the expense of other features. And, the answer to that question is generally going to be no. I just don't use it enough, and I don't think other people use it enough, for it to make sense for developers to invest resources into making a split screen mode work.

The future for split screen is games developed entirely around it. It Takes Two is one of the best games I've ever played and its huge success shows there is a significant market for high quality split screen games so seeing that success I imagine some other developers will try to make their own split screen focused games which I look forward to. It would be fantastic if more Hazelight type games were made.

Depends if you count it as an actual benefit. Plenty prefer to game on their own TV and console. For me, if I had the choice of my friend coming around or us playing online, I'd say let's play online because split screen doesn't do it for me anymore. To each to their own.

I do not care is not the same as nobody cares. I don't care for narrative only games (aka Walking Simulator, the Heavy Rains or what you have), so I should conclude they don't need to exist?

That is not what is being said. That is also a very poor rebuttal.

Having the option for something superior and choosing to opt for the inferior way of playing a MP game is what the argument is about. It's a feature only a small minority use, it's not worth delaying a game indefinitely for.

When BG3 releases on the X/S, the masses are not going to care about the split screen mode. Majority play BG3 for the single player campaign however they still have the option for MP via Online. This is literally a nothing burger.

If it means that much to you and you own a S, well thank the lord your file is crossed saved, so trade in the S and get the X and your problem has been solved.

I agree that split screen is not imortant enough to keep the parity here and delay for this. It is nice to have and not irrelevant as I said, but it is not important enough to skip the game altogether. If that is what you meant, then I agree.

Splitscreen is a dying breed. Its been dying since halo 4 days. Even nintendo games are moving away from it. Its only a handful like mario kart type games and 2d sonic. MS has said the forza motorsport team have checked the stats of those who used splitscreen in their previous games and they said its very very small. Its a waste of resources for any developers. How many people actually ply splitscreen on cod? lol. Those who complain that splitscreen is a must have forgotten how people use to do lan parties on pc back in the day !!. I remember having to carry my gaming desktop to my friends house and my monitor if he didnt have any!. This can be done with console and still have the coop couch experience. At least carrying a console to your friends house is easier then carrying a gaming desktop lol

Unfortunately,  there is truth here

Split screen was great back in the day. But the reality is technology has passed it by. Look I remember in junior high, high school and college gaming with people at my house or me going to theirs with games chinese food, pizza, etc. It was some damn fun times. But times have changed and tech as evolved. Granted, not all tech evolutions are for the better. But this one for the most part is. Playing online with friends in the comfort of your own home without having to carry around a bunch of games and a system is good.

That's what split-screen is for not to have to do that. /facepalm

But yes why play with your wife or kids when you can play against random strangers online... You'll get to that age where friends don't have time anymore to jump in daily / at any moment and you want to share your gaming experiences at home in split-screen...

It's not technology that passed it by, screen sizes nowadays are excellent for split-screen. Greed and the focus on the best graphics has passed it by. Every player having to buy his own copy is of course better than split-screen. And of course screenshots and pretty trailers sell games, not features :/

Lack of split screen is terrible for families. I'm not buying two ps5 units, two copies of a game, two TVs and two PSN subscriptions.

I've often wondered how much of a factor Nintendo's focus on local MP has helped their sales. Even weak coop like Odyssey is better than none nothing and frankly was great with the kids.  Mario Kart, Smash, LM3, Pikmin 3, Pikmin 4, etc.....  Mario Wonder......

Looks like splitscreen on PS5 is in a VERY rough state. The game is incredible regardless, but that's disheartening that even the latest and greatest consoles have trouble with splitscreen. It's like games are just too demanding that many developers may decide splitscreen is just not worth it. Hopefully Larian will at least be able to get BG3 to run at a solid 30fps in splitscreen.
