@Phenomajp13 So to summarize:

Most of this entire conversation could've been avoided if you hadn't acted all accusatory towards him and just took his word for it earlier. You really should stop with the combative posts. |
Answer on that again, why the all 20/30 posts+ nonsense from you, when you could just take my word for in my very first post about that and shut up ? Also why after you took my word for it earlier (before the ban) you renew the debate, when we already ended that before the ban hit you ? This is looking like flaming on purpose to me. You could avoid a whole debate of 20/30 posts + by just ignoring my post and take my word for it from the beginning, or at least not returning after the ban and renewing the whole thing. Also why you finally agree with me before the ban in that post of yours, and then after that ban, it seems you were back again not agreeing with me and started to accuse for the very same thing you said you are okay earlier (took my word for it) and then you aren't okay with that and don't took the word again? It seems like you just want debate every few days, then rest for a couple of days, then starting all over again. I bet after a few days, you will quote me again for whatever post I make about the Switch, you will hook on to one of the words in the post, and you will start the same thing again. I bet on that! That is purposeful flaming and spamming. Way worse then moving goalpost. Also why you ignore more than half of my points towards you ? You take just what you want, and comment on it. You don't have enough arguments and only comment what you want, how pathetic.
@Phenomajp13 Why is my poll thread of outselling PS2 aiming at 160M and not 162M if I want to move the goalpost ? Or if my intentions are what you say why I didn't put 161.8M as the target there (since that was before the 160.6M confirmation) and I just put 160M ? Why I haven't edited that ? Tell me. Or why you don't get the lots of my posts that are for Switch and 160M mentions for beating PS2 as a point, but take one post that was targeted purely to the fact that some people will doubt 160.6M and 162M will shut their mouths? Why you always took out words out of context that suits your hidden agenda and intentions best, but won't take words (or actions) from me that proves my point and the truth ? This is only proving what person you are, and what your character is.

I missed this back in December 2024. Geez, no wonder people mock Sony for taking PS2 numbers out of theirs sleeves every now and then. If this image was true after all, why did they take so long to confirm it, then? Well, in the end, Shawn Layden is not working at Sony anymore so this information is not actually official. |
I know people like to believe Sony pulled 160m units out it's arse, but there were other outlets, including references on Wikipedia that had estimated that Sony had sold around 158m-160m Units for years.
Perhaps Sony didn't look at the number much because there's no brownie points for most console sales in the corporate world and they were focused on the PS4 release by then, two generations on. Also no one was focused on what was he biggest seller. It's only the Switch closing in on the number that Sony thought perhaps they should have celebrated the milestone of what the PS2 achieved.
160,636,886 is all that's needed.
...to avoid getting banned for inactivity, I may have to resort to comments that are of a lower overall quality and or beneath my moral standards.
Doctor_MG said: The idea that 10-15% of PS2 units aren't even accounted for and the real number is 170M or higher is, in my opinion, just way too farfetched of a claim. If true, why would that be the case for Playstation but not Nintendo anyway? |
I think Nintendo is very trustworthy with its numbers, as they even reported exact sales figures for the Wii U—even though they were terrible—and always provide numbers down to the second decimal place.
Sony's numbers, on the other hand, are inconsistent if you go through old (annual) reports and compare them with each other. This remains true even when considering that, starting from FY06 (ending March 31, 2007), Sony changed its reporting method from manufactured numbers to shipped numbers (= sell-in).
On Sony's Business Data & Sales homepage (https://sonyinteractive.com/en/our-company/business-data-sales/), they list "more than 160 million" as sell-in (= shipped), but it is unclear whether this number includes so-called unsold units, as Sony isn’t as trustworthy as Nintendo. The 160,636,885 figure refers to the number of units produced.
If we believe Sony and assume that the "more than 160 million" represents the true shipped numbers, then the 160,636,885 production figure must be incorrect—since it would imply that only 0.4% of units were demo, defective, broken, replacement, or spare parts. That can't be true!
Nintendo reports shipped units to the nearest 10,000. So once they say the Switch is at 160.64M or higher than I will say definitively the Switch is number 1. Mind you the number given by Sony - 160,636,885 - is units produced and not shipped, and they have the PS2 at over 160M the actual number sold is likely closer to 160M than it is 160,636,885.
The PS2 range is at 160,000,001 to 160,636,885.
Nintendo will be releasing its earnings report for the quarter ending December 2024 in roughly 7 or 8 hours.

Everything over 160.0M should be taken as Switch passed the PS2, It's Sony's fault we don't have exact number, and it's they who said over 160.0M on their website, so 160.01M should be Switch beating the PS2. Honestly after they waited for over 10 years to update the number from 155 to 160M, I am not exactly sure if there are over 160M actually sold units to consumers, but that's what they are saying.

That's what I've been saying since they came up with this "more than 160M" thing
