Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft is future proofing you with DRM

A lot of people are thinking so negatively about Microsoft's DRM. Instead of thinking outside of the box, they are calling for witch hunts. I do agree that MS doesn't know shit about explaining their stance. So now let's think outside of the box and bring the positive to what MS is doing. What Microsoft is doing is future proofing your game library. Making it so that next gen and beyond, you will retain your game library without having to repurchase them.

Lets bring some light into the whole PSP and PSP Go fiasco. You bought a game for PSP. Sony releases the PSP Go which is digital only. Shit hit the fan when people found out that they couldn't convert their games over to PSP Go. You had to repurchase the digital version. Wouldn't it have been nice if Sony anticipated this from the start. Made a way so that if you bought a physical copy, you would automatically get a digital copy too?

Enter Xbox One. Your physical copy is also your digital copy. Every game you buy will be added to your digital game collection, future proofing you for the digital age. For me, it wouldn't make sense to buy digital. Why buy it and have nothing physical to show for it, when I can buy a store copy and get it converted digitally for free?

There have been many times when I've been relaxing on the couch, playing a game. Then decide to play another game, but I don't have the disc in. Makes me wish I bought the digital version. It's a pain having such a divided gaming experience on current consoles, where half of the games you can play instantly and half the games you need to get up and put a disc in.

Microsoft's current system does have it's flaws with 24 hour check-in. They should have  added a check disc, if no internet connection, verfication. So that all you would need to play offline is the disc in the drive.

Sony can also future proof themselves if they choose. The simplest way being to add a digital voucher to every copy. This would also help with making people to want to buy a new copy, where the voucher hasn't been used.

What if...
You missed a rare game, and can't find it in stores - ebay is your only choice. But, no used games unless it's a participating retalier - ebay is not even in retail.
What if...
XB1 ends its life and servers for authentication and cloud features get taken down. How are you gonna play any game? Or a game needing cloud processing?

There's quite a lot of flaws with this. And frankly... laziness in not wanting to get up is not a valid positive point. I mean, come on. You're not lifting weights.

Great view point OP. I wish more people thought like this. I have been trying to convince my xbox friends that this is a good thing, as after E3, they all pretty much decided on getting PS4's due to all this DRM business. I have been slowly reconvincing them to chose Xbox One.

I think this also happened with the PSP - Vita transition. I agree with everything you posted

The same thing could happen to PS+ afters years of paying for free games, you might lose them. It could also happen to steam, and no one talks shit about them :)

We already know its future proof. I cant speak for everyone but I dont want their future. I used to buy Apple and I switched for a reason. Attacking Gamestop is no way to future proof their product. They need to realize that physical media is still the heart of console gaming. People on consoles demand ownership of their product and they are saying, we don't care. Everything about the next Xbox is a restriction.

The only thing there future proofing is the guarantee, that one day you will not be able to play the games youve bought.

You mean like all those digital Xbox 360 games that I can play on Xbox One? Oh wait!... :P

I think consoles are pretty future proof just the way they are. My NES is still running without problems. Yeah, the battery died on some games, but if I really wanted to, I could change those. But I just play without saving, doesn't bother me much. At least I can play them.

Sure, I can't play UMD games on my PSP Go. But you know what? They run just fine on my PSP-1000! Oh snap!

If I missed a rare game released on disc, then it's my own damn fault for not pre-ordering. I would then have to just download the game. I would have been hating myself for not pre-ordering the Last of Us special edition, because you can't buy it now. Good thing I did.. :P

I'm sure MS will change their policy down the road to accommodate for an end of life. It's all trial and error. If MS messes up, they will fix it. RROD extended warranties to 3 years.

What if I have a walking problem and it pains me to walk? And us Americans are lazy.. don't you know? :P

Arent the games you buy tied to the Xbox One servers? So if the servers go down, you simply cant play your games?

Aka - In what, 15 Years time(?) the box and your games will be useless?

I like the idea of having a digital copy of every game, but its the other restrictions in place that totally ruin the idea.

I'd love to take my games into the next gen. It was a letdown when sony cancelled it for PS3 and I still think it is a shame.
However, backwards compatibilty is just a very very minor issue. It doesn't keep people from buying new gen consoles. The lack of BC has even made numerous companies a considerable amount of money by rereleasing their games.
So, the least of the reasons for Microsoft to implement DRM will be for you to take your games with you the next gen.
Not having to stand up just because you want to switch a game isn't that big a deal, or is it?

If you want to talk positive about the Xboxone, go talk games, go talk features like skyping while playing.
Or surprise me with a different stance that proves their DRM to be positive for consumers.
