What MS is doing is pretty much the opposite of future-proofing.

So having your entire Xbox One library in the cloud is going backwards? How far backwards are we going? Are we going stone age backwards or "Hey Jesus, nice to meet you," backwards?

I would have thought having a free digital copy that you have access to anytime and anywhere, internet permitting and third world country permitting, would be going forward.

Free copy?

Yes, when you buy a physical copy you will only need it to sync the game with your account, after that you can download the game on any console with your account whenever you want. You can even burn the disc if you want

You are speculating, the historical evidence is that 1) they shutdown the halo 2 servers even when there was people still playing the game 2) they stopped supporting xbox as soon as xbox 360 come out 3) they will completaly drop backward compatibility with xbox 360 on xbone, 4) For now countries outside the 21 announce will not be able to play xbone games regardless if there are xbox 360 games on those country.

This is in relation to gaming but is the same with their software, for example, MS stopped support for windows xp to force users to migrate to windows 7 even though windows xp has 54% of the market. So what historical evindence states is that is more likely that MS will have you place all your games under their DRM schema and when next next gen comes they will shutdown all server and not provide backwards copatibility to force you to move on to the next next XBox.

So not free? Just solves the problem of carrying a disc around... if it even was a problem.

Either is PS4... What's your point?

Before you say Gakai, that is playing streamed from a server. MS can do that too, if they choose. Personally I wouldnt use it, streaming video in HD is a bandwidth hog.

Yeah, we should all thank them for their foresight and send them a christmas card.

How exactly is it going forward when we already have that option with digital downloads?  Except without the mandatory online checks every day.

I doubt MS would want that kind of lawsuit on their hands. For everyone who hasn't been keeping up with times.MS has been trying to be the good guy eversince that lawsuit where they were accused of trying to be an evil empire. They had to downsize. Since then Google has taken the role of buying everything up. MS is actually trying to play nice now.

What's the point when you are not allowed to sell on your physical copy when you are finished?

What's the point when game developers shut down and we won't have a diversity of games to play besides EA and Activision games? Gamestop makes a killing off used games that they didn't even make. All they are is a glorified pawn shop who can make prices whatever they want, since buying up Funcoland. Gamestop could have changed things if they gave money back to devs for each re-sell.

This also goes out to the Ebay resellers, who are ruining the videogame market from legitimate gamers. They are buying up rare and special editions and launch consoles to sell for their own profit. Take the rare games out of their hands and they will have to finally get a real job, instead of playing the middleman.

I said this before and i will say it again. It's not the consumers fault that developers are closing down. It's their own fault for spending so much on development that they struggle to make any money. Lets say for example GTA V, that cost $135 million to develop, is it really necessary to cost that much?. I know it will easily sell since it's GTA but some developers spend millions on smaller franchises like Mirror's Edge and then wonder why it doesn't make any profit. I suppose you blame consumers for a lack of money to buy as well do you? Like they caused the recession!

And if we will only get EA and Activision games in the future, you need to broaden your prospects. For example, indie developers are thriving on PC despite rampant piracy, something that is far worse than second hand. And you are only kidding yourself if you think people will buy something they won't get money out of later. People invest their time and money in something and should and do expect something when they are done with it. Also, you complain about gamestop but what if you got your way and they went bankrupt becuase of Xbox One's absurd second hand policies? What will happen to all those who lost their jobs? There is nothing for them at the moment.

Also, you complain about ebay but what about collectors?, they should be allowed to do what they want since it's a good ready for trade. I guess i support free market in this case, since it just works. Also, if microsoft proved successful with Xbox One. What would happen to it when the Xbox Two comes out? the system and it's games will become worthless by then and only serve as doorstops and paperweights thanks to DRM. It's just too risky what Microsoft is trying to do here and it looks like people will refuse to agree to what they are doing and i'm happy about that since second hand gaming is not the problem here.

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

The Xbone is trying to phase out disc use even though it has the ability to use discs. The PS4 values discs and digital are secondary. Two different viewpoints.
