Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft is future proofing you with DRM

I'm not trying to convince anyone to buy Xbox One, buy what you want. It's your money. I'm just trying to explain the possible benefits of the DRM system. Like I said, I'm not a fan of the 24 hour check-in. You just gotta live with it if you think the digital rights benefit you. If later down the road MS re-evalutes their DRM policy, because it isn't working out, then good.

Oh forgot to mention, now that you say that MS want to be on the good side, MS points are expiring, yep, buy something or you will lose your money and MS does not care, wait there is nothing left that you would like to buy... tough luck. There you go, trust them yes, DRM is for good.

Xbox one is a good way to force people into upgrading into the next iteration of your games, just close the servers and people will have no choice but to purchase the new version of your games, it's genious, if you are not a consumer

This might be pure speculation, but if games are tied to your account it could be like steam, change hardware, OS, but the service (xbox live) and your account with all your games will be there, ready to download and play

not if they close the servers on purpose, imagine cod 15 is coming out but a huge number of people are still playing cod 12 because it was very well done, developers will be able to close down the cod 12 servers and force people to upgrade because with the Xbone you won't be able to do anything with the old version. At least now you can still play the compaing or local multiplayers if the servers are shut down but in the future you will be screwed

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Did they close the modern warfare 1/2 blops 1 servers before mw3 and blops 2 released? if they did, then you might be right, who knows, upgrading from one game to a better one every 1or 2 years is pretty common this generation

Obviously the Xbox One isn't for you. Aren't you glad there is internet to do research on products?

I remember buying a Sony Clie PEG-UX50. I DID lots of research on it. It just came out and I bought it. A couple weeks later, they cancel the Clie brand.

You can only do so much research and have good faith in companies to make a wise decision.

Anyway, we went off topic.

BTW, thanks for letting me know bout the MS points. I didn't know that.

Not yet, but companies are getting desparated for money they keep wasting money on features that are useless and doesn't improve their game very much like hirering famous people to voice their charactors, also cod was just an exemple I think this practice will mostlikely happen with yearly release sports games at first

Its too early to tell, i dont think its impossible for companies to keep some servers for old games, after all nintendo has vc, sony sells ps1/2 classics, maybe microsoft will give the option to xbone two(or whatever is called) to buy old xbox/360/one games but those who already have some games synced to their account will dl for free.

And if we are talking about multiplayer servers, BC or not they will die someday.

I don't realy get your point
you say it is good , that for every game I buy I get a digital copy but in reality I only get a digital copy and disc that is worth nothing...
if there is a problem with the servers I can't play no matter if I buy the digital or the disc version
and let's be honest there are always problems with servers. just look at sim city or WoW login servers, even steam was fucked up in the beginning
if my connection for any reason is down I can not play, to be honest that doesn't happen really often for me but when it does I usually pass the time with playing games...
on sony side if I choose to buy the digital copy it is linked to my account too , I can play it offline or I buy the disc version
I have all the options what I want to do
sure there is also the possibility that they shut down the ps+ service but I kinda have to count on that to happen with a service but that's just the same with xboxone, the whole console is more a service now
saying that used game sales are the reason why comapnies get shut down is just stupid
they get shut down because of stupid business decisions and stupid business models
there is no other industry I can think of that tries to chip in on used sales

all in all I got to say that their press conference would have been pretty good if it wasn't for all that drm bullshit
and in the end it will probably half ass bad as people imagine it to be but it sure isn't futur proofing or taking a step forward

Well im not really an x1 expert or anything but you only need to be connected to the internet once a day and it seems it takes less than a minute, after that you can play offline

Its true that used games/piracy might not kill the whole industry, some smallers devs might die or they will be forced to make ios/android games for the rest of their lives, probably that extra cash they can get could probably help in making better sequels or in some cases make sequels

DRM is no way "future proofs" the console. It is a completely unnecessary step in the evolution of gaming. MS is once again trying to push software to the consumers that they either don't want or aren't ready for at that time.

Besides your main point fails to recognize that this "future" won't come until at least 5 years (maybe more) down the road, and by then these purchases will be a lot cheaper than their initial release value. They are truly only doing this as way to extort more money out of people bottom line. Only after all the negative feedback did they try to come up with some more friendlier uses for DRM.

The point is, DRM is not implemented to benefit gamers like you are trying to imply, is to squeeze gamers out of money.

Yes the Xbone is not for me, but in any case i dont have a choice, my country is not in the supported countries list.
