Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft is future proofing you with DRM

You mean like all those digital Xbox 360 games that I can play on Xbox One? Oh wait!... :P

I think consoles are pretty future proof just the way they are. My NES is still running without problems. Yeah, the battery died on some games, but if I really wanted to, I could change those. But I just play without saving, doesn't bother me much. At least I can play them.

Sure, I can't play UMD games on my PSP Go. But you know what? They run just fine on my PSP-1000! Oh snap!

Yup, if your house gets washed away and your Xbox 360, with the digital copies you've downloaded, along with it. You will still be able to download the games to another 360.. :P

And when your PSP-1000 gets hit by a meteor while your playing it walking down the street and your UMD is shattered, you are no longer future proofed.. :D

So now let's think outside of the box and bring the positive to what MS is doing.

That's not thinking outside the box, that's burying your head in the sand.

I could buy my games again. Used.

Lets bring some light into the whole PSP and PSP Go fiasco. You bought a game for PSP. Sony releases the PSP Go which is digital only. Shit hit the fan when people found out that they couldn't convert their games over to PSP Go. You had to repurchase the digital version. Wouldn't it have been nice if Sony anticipated this from the start. Made a way so that if you bought a physical copy, you would automatically get a digital copy too?

I think this also happened with the PSP - Vita transition. I agree with everything you posted

What if...
You missed a rare game, and can't find it in stores - ebay is your only choice. But, no used games unless it's a participating retalier - ebay is not even in retail.
What if...
XB1 ends its life and servers for authentication and cloud features get taken down. How are you gonna play any game? Or a game needing cloud processing?

There's quite a lot of flaws with this. And frankly... laziness in not wanting to get up is not a valid positive point. I mean, come on. You're not lifting weights.

The same thing could happen to PS+ afters years of paying for free games, you might lose them. It could also happen to steam, and no one talks shit about them :)

If that happens to steam (most likelty cause valve goes bankrupt) expect a bidding war for someone else to buy it. Also steam is not tied to ONE PC in a generation.

XBOX one once generation ends your games end.

BIG DIFFERENCE IN MY EYES.

Well, its too early to tell, the OP talks about the possibility that once the generation ends, you might be able to carry digital content from once console to the next gen one (xbox one > xbox two), consoles are now similar to pc in terms of hardware, and will most likely stay like that so BC should be completely possible especially with digital content

What MS is doing is pretty much the opposite of future-proofing.

I LOVE ICELAND!

What's the point when you are not allowed to sell on your physical copy when you are finished?

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

So having your entire Xbox One library in the cloud is going backwards? How far backwards are we going? Are we going stone age backwards or "Hey Jesus, nice to meet you," backwards?

I would have thought having a free digital copy that you have access to anytime and anywhere, internet permitting and third world country permitting, would be going forward.

What's the point when game developers shut down and we won't have a diversity of games to play besides EA and Activision games? Gamestop makes a killing off used games that they didn't even make. All they are is a glorified pawn shop who can make prices whatever they want, since buying up Funcoland. Gamestop could have changed things if they gave money back to devs for each re-sell.

This also goes out to the Ebay resellers, who are ruining the videogame market from legitimate gamers. They are buying up rare and special editions and launch consoles to sell for their own profit. Take the rare games out of their hands and they will have to finally get a real job, instead of playing the middleman.
