Forums - Nintendo - No Baldur's Gate for Wii U, bad Nintendo experience to blame

The original came out way back in 97 on PC and 98 on PS (they also released a Mac version in 98 but that doesn't really matter). While I heard of the game from then and I heard about the sequel when it came out on WiiWare, I just never got around to buying it.  I am glad now after seeing how people in the company act. To my knowledge the first game was good (I never played it but remember it having good reviews) but it never was a huge breakout success. Anyways, I was trying to just state that not many Wii owners probably even heard about this game (the original or the sequel). I bet most gamers never even played the original version.

Nintendo isn't completely innocent since they could have done more to promote the game such as offer free demo, videos, etc. They are doing this on the 3DS Shop though considering every title has a video attached to it and they are allowing a decent amount of demos. To think MDK2 was going to be successful as a title like World of Goo on the WiiWare was just wishful thinking.  The fact that they couldn't even get word of mouth to help sales past 6,000 shows their failure.

So essentially based on the responses here they were:

1. Stupid for releasing the game on Wiiware.

2. Stupid for learning from their mistake.

Brilliant thread. ^^

Stupid for not considering the Wii U even though it will likely not have the same limitations as WiiWare.

A late port with a 6,000 sales minimum on new released hardware is likely to be profitable? Then consider that perhaps the 55M iPads in the wild which will likely be closing in on 80M by the time the Wii U is released and perhaps consider they might have other priorities.

So, a game that's incapable of managing 6,000 units would be a perfect fit on the iPad?  That's not very reassuring of the quality of the majority of iPad games.

It's more a perfect fit due to size of potential market... I thought this was obvious?

Lol, nah I knew what you meant.  I was just capitalizing on the joke potential.

Who cares thats its not coming to the Wii U. Why would you want to play baldur's gate on anything other than the PC? Topics like this should be auto deleted cause they go no where.

I dunno about that. I learned a lot from this thread.

My thoughts:

MDK2 is simply on the wrong system on WW. It belongs on Steam or such where it probably recieved better sales. Personally, the game is old, and while I love Bioware (especially classic Bioware) I wouldn't pay much for this game, even remade. I believe it was $10, about $5 more than I'd consider.

Rol's argument about the 6000 limit to prevent crap-ware on WW is absurb considering that most WW games are the very crap that Rol is pretending Nintendo is attempting to avoid. Secondly, a great many quality titles have failed to turn a profit. Sometimes even well marketed quality games simply don't appeal to people's imagination and just don't sell. Remember Okami? Mirror's Edge?

Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition I likely will pay for (if the price is right, doubt I'll ever have time to play it though) but do I care if it's out on WiiU? No. Not a bit.

You have a number of people who bash the developers here cry out in the area of "core" games on the Wii, saying there is enough or wanting more.  When the sales figures aren't there as desired, then there is discussions of things being wrong somewhere, and bashing the industry for not giving people more.  This attitude ends up with a crowd championing The Conduit as awesome.

Quality is an element, but one.  Quality is mostly you met the requirements of the wishes of people, in a pleasing way.

The thing is; its alwyas the developers fault, Nintendo never cocks things up. At least according to a lot of people in here. Despite Nintendo having cocked up. A lot.

Sure.  But that doesn't mean you give a developer a free pass when it is their fault.

It's not Beamdog's fault, except in releasing a title with little appeal to the Wii audience when Nintendo has a 6000 min limit.   They overestimated the appeal of their game on Wii.    Now they're having a bad case of sour grapes.  Of course, if I didn't get paid, I wouldn't be happy either.

And all the nonsense here about marketing.  Please.  Many of the top selling WW games had little to no marketing as well.   The game merely appeals to the audience and / or stands out from the crowd or it doesn't when it comes to a channel like WW/PSN/XBL/Steam.   Having said that, it could have been marketed better.

Then do explain to me how every single shooter released on WiiWare so far has easily suprassed the 6,000 threshold except for MDK2.

I'll confess my ignorance on this point, and ask you what these titles are.

Who demanded an iPad game for the Wii U? I'll read through the thread after dinner, but this information is already well known, it's just a repeat of what those guys at Icon games said four months ago: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=138548

The have to produce good games to sell them. AThe MDK 2 proposal was poor and simply not attractive.

Have you played it? Not saying I have, but I've heard it's good to great

Probably someone appreciated it, for my personal taste it's a poor game and I didn't considered to buy it on Wiiware.
