Forums - Nintendo - No Baldur's Gate for Wii U, bad Nintendo experience to blame

6,000 units at approximately $6 each would yield $36,000.   If a single software engineer worked on this game for 6 months, it would break even at $36,000.

But we know that several people worked on the title for more than 6 months.   If they had 8 people working on the game for 9 months, they'd have to sell 75,000 units.  But they failed to even get to 6,0000 units.  Profit was a goal far, far far from the reaches of Beamdog regardless of the 6,000 unit threshhold.

You sure they worked on it that long? And they say they even hired a PR firm, so they were clearly trying

I'm not certain of the development schedule but I do know it was 'several months'.  How many that actually amounts to is unknown.   But you can deduce from my figures that even if it were nothing more than 1 month, that's still $50,000.  So they are still less than half way to breaking even.    And if they hired a PR firm, they should be more mad at them than at Nintendo because the PR firm didn't do a damn thing but take money and run.

no he doesn't. they know what they were getting into to before the game come out.

I do agree the limit is a joke though.

Yes, he does. He has more right than ever to complain after he's experienced it...

No, he doesn't.   They knew before getting into the project the limitations of compressing a 400 MB game into a 40 MB file size.   They knew before signing anything the specifics of the 6,000 unit threshold.

I also found out they had a 9 month certification process.  That means they were screwing up for months on months before Nintendo gave the green light for actual distribution online.   Most WiiWare titles see a certification process no longer than 2 months.

Fact is they knew all the details before signing anything, they failed to market their product, they screwed up their certification and now they want to play sour grapes becaus their product failed to sell more than 6,000 units.

As I said before, I spoke with other WiiWare developers this morning and they are all laughing at these guys.

By the way, what indication anyone here have that the WiiU will have any other system that is superior for downloadable content than then Wii has? Has Nintendo given any indication it will be different or better? All indications I saw is that it will be "roll your own" on in it and flexibility. Why would anyone who had bad experience on the Wii, think WiiU will be different. But hey, there are people here who thought Skyrim would be bug free when it came out also, Someone even said that iD was going to help with development of it.

I think him ranting about this after they accepeted the conditions is not very professional. This is like spiting against the wind. It may come back to him.

There are several factors that suggest the Wii U's online service will be better.  To start with, the 3DS's service is better.    Do you really need more than that?

As for distribution platform partners, I think you are thinking of Valve, not iD.   Valve is highly intersted in having Steam on Wii U and Nintendo has stated they will be working with 3rd party services so you take from that what you want.

The 3DS eShop would be the first indicator. It hasn't corrected all of the problems (I feel poor organisation remains a problem), but there has been a lot of improvement. More demos, notification of new content, and then there was the then denied suggestion of a 2GB file size limit, bit nobody has hinted at what it actually is.

They've taken too many steps forward to go back to the Wii setup.

No, I meant iD.  When I posted a thread on here asking people why they thought Skyrim would not be a bugfest, someone actually said that iD was going to help with the development of it.

The have to produce good games to sell them. AThe MDK 2 proposal was poor and simply not attractive.

Have you played it? Not saying I have, but I've heard it's good to great

I had it on the Dreamcast.  It struck me as really good in the day.  I got stuck on the graphic adventure part of the game (game has 3 different play modes to it).  I go by the general reviews and opinions of others so it isn't just my 2 cents.

I get annoyed at posts in this thread, because the trend is based on flawed reasoning.  The belief is, somehow, if you do quality, it produces its own sales.  That is bull.  Release a good title in the wrong area, and it sells poorly.   Don't market properly (where you release is part of marketing) and it sells poorly.  It is likely MDK2 is NOT suitable for Wiiware.  Combine with the compensation system, and you end up without a cent.  As good as it is, I don't see a market for it on the Wii at all.  It is a shooter, which don't do well.  I commend them trying, but wouldn't expect solid sales of it.

People presume that only bad things don't sell well, and this is wrong.  Quality alone doesn't sell, no matter how much core gamers want it to be.  Quality in service of what people want, at a sufficient level, will usually sell IF marketed properly.

But that is where they went wrong.  Even the knowledgable people of an online forum generally had no idea the game was even on WiiWare.

How do you expect a game (good ro bad) to sell if no one knows it even exists?    Very rarely does a WiiWare game not cross the 6,000 unit threshold.  And just because MDK2 is a shooter doesn't mean it is destined to do sub 6,000 on WiiWare.   The game was well known when originally released.  The name alone would have sold it beyond 6,000 units.  But they did nothing to market the game on WiiWare.

I don't know about the certification process of WiiWare specifically, but the vast majority of closed-system certification processes aren't that much different from a software QA process where software is tested against a well documented set of performance requirements.

Even if Nintendo was slow, I would expect the time to test a game would be a couple of weeks, which would mean a 9 month process would have been the game being run through this process multiple times. The first failure would be expected, the second failure would be typical, and the third failure would be common; but failures beyond that are more an indication that the developer is bad than anything else. If you assume a six week interval of getting a system tested, fixing the issues and resubmitting it to testing, this game would have failed this process 6 times before it passed it on the 7th time ...
