Forums - Nintendo - No Baldur's Gate for Wii U, bad Nintendo experience to blame

I had it on the Dreamcast.  It struck me as really good in the day.  I got stuck on the graphic adventure part of the game (game has 3 different play modes to it).  I go by the general reviews and opinions of others so it isn't just my 2 cents.

I get annoyed at posts in this thread, because the trend is based on flawed reasoning.  The belief is, somehow, if you do quality, it produces its own sales.  That is bull.  Release a good title in the wrong area, and it sells poorly.   Don't market properly (where you release is part of marketing) and it sells poorly.  It is likely MDK2 is NOT suitable for Wiiware.  Combine with the compensation system, and you end up without a cent.  As good as it is, I don't see a market for it on the Wii at all.  It is a shooter, which don't do well.  I commend them trying, but wouldn't expect solid sales of it.

People presume that only bad things don't sell well, and this is wrong.  Quality alone doesn't sell, no matter how much core gamers want it to be.  Quality in service of what people want, at a sufficient level, will usually sell IF marketed properly.

But that is where they went wrong.  Even the knowledgable people of an online forum generally had no idea the game was even on WiiWare.

How do you expect a game (good ro bad) to sell if no one knows it even exists?    Very rarely does a WiiWare game not cross the 6,000 unit threshold.  And just because MDK2 is a shooter doesn't mean it is destined to do sub 6,000 on WiiWare.   The game was well known when originally released.  The name alone would have sold it beyond 6,000 units.  But they did nothing to market the game on WiiWare.

I knew it was coming out and read reviews of it.  I also liked the original.  Didn't mean I would buy it though.  I would say the core people on forums likely aren't looking for anything on Wiiware.  End result is, a title like MDK2, if you want to bother to do it, needs even more effort than on other platforms.

What will happen is developers don't understand the need to market, can do quality, and would flop.  Developers likely should of done the petition route, and got people to sign up for it before starting and then fill them in on what is next.

But knowing this now, they likely decided that Nintendo isn't worth dealing with in the future, and that is what this is about.  But, people don't like to hear it, so it is dump on the developer.

Well, I am personally taking this to heart and will be trying to promote my own designs, more than I am now.  People can see them here:

One of the designs should be in an upcoming issue of Games Magazine.

My thoughts:

MDK2 is simply on the wrong system on WW. It belongs on Steam or such where it probably recieved better sales. Personally, the game is old, and while I love Bioware (especially classic Bioware) I wouldn't pay much for this game, even remade. I believe it was $10, about $5 more than I'd consider.

Rol's argument about the 6000 limit to prevent crap-ware on WW is absurb considering that most WW games are the very crap that Rol is pretending Nintendo is attempting to avoid. Secondly, a great many quality titles have failed to turn a profit. Sometimes even well marketed quality games simply don't appeal to people's imagination and just don't sell. Remember Okami? Mirror's Edge?

Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition I likely will pay for (if the price is right, doubt I'll ever have time to play it though) but do I care if it's out on WiiU? No. Not a bit.

You have a number of people who bash the developers here cry out in the area of "core" games on the Wii, saying there is enough or wanting more.  When the sales figures aren't there as desired, then there is discussions of things being wrong somewhere, and bashing the industry for not giving people more.  This attitude ends up with a crowd championing The Conduit as awesome.

Quality is an element, but one.  Quality is mostly you met the requirements of the wishes of people, in a pleasing way.

It doesn't need "more" effort, it needs "some" effort, which is a value greater than "no" effort, which is what was put up here. I remember when MDK2 was released, seeing a fair few people pleasantly surprised that it existed, but when the weekly "Nintendo dl service update" post on your website of choice is the first news anyone has of your game's existence, you've done something wrong, and that is an issue entirely separate from any success or failure of game design.

No one is bashing the develop just because they are bashing Nintendo.  They are bashing the developer for acting like an immature little brat with sour grapes.

Every developer I know that has worked on WiiWare titles feels the same way I do about this.Beamdog knew the terms, they knew the process, they knew the threshhold.  It took them 9 months and several resubmissions to get their game under the required 40 MB file size resitrction (which they knew about before signing anything).  They then failed to market the game.  And now after they failed to get their game to sell well they want to make like middle school kids and make immature comments on Twitter?

I agree that a petition system to detremine initial demand would have helped greatly.  Not only in finding if the WiiWare market would support the game but you'd have early marketing presence.   And third, petitions are a form of community engagement which is one of my rules for small developer success.

MDK was an excellent TPS with first person sniping mode. I didn't buy MDK2, but I know it's known to as good.
Most probably bad marketing is to blame, but kudos to them as devs for shrinking it in just 40MB.
Maybe they largely overestimated the game's fame amongst Wii gamers after so many years since tthe original was released, while on more hardcore platforms than Wii it's quite natural the game is better known.

The first baldur's gate was cool but im with nintendo in this one, and can explain why your game didn't sold i just realized that it's on the wii ware thanks to this post... i mean if you decide to sell whatever let's say a hotwheels car, and you don't tell anyone that you're selling it how do you expect... i don't even... u_u -- whatever, you can take your baldur's gate and shove it up to your... ù_ú

For those who don't know, Beamdog is mostly a digital distribution service. It has developed very few games.

The first one it did was MDK2 HD for the PC, which is available for $15 from its own service (which is why it is not on another service, like Steam, because that would be the competitor).

But when it came time for a console release, it appears that all Beamdog did was look to see what had the most sales ... and nothing else. Five minutes on a news board in 2010 would have provided enough info to know to go a different direction. All of the "problems" it talked about were known then.

Finally, the fact that a company would not release an HD remake to an HD console and the fact that its lead person seems to know no tact tells me all I want to know about it.

The thing is; its alwyas the developers fault, Nintendo never cocks things up. At least according to a lot of people in here. Despite Nintendo having cocked up. A lot.

Sure.  But that doesn't mean you give a developer a free pass when it is their fault.
