If so, their argument is undermined by the fact that they never released the game in Europe/Australasia; which could've potentially put it above the 6k threshold. If it's just a NA thing, is their a separate threshold for PAL and Japan? If not, or if there is a smaller one, surely it's is NoA who is partly to blame, not Nintendo as a whole. |
I did some googling and found an article from 2009 about it. There's a limit for each region so the 6k limit should be for America only. It also says that once you reach that limit you'll get every penny back, but if you fail you're screwed.
I guess the limit was introduced to get rid of cheap, unwanted products...

This points to a publicity stunt, surely the whining will actually generate more interest and take more effort in promoting the game than they previously did. Therefore the game will sell above the 6000 unit margin and the complaints become null, as if it never happened.

Which is a full year before Beamdog STARTED the process to get MDK2 on WiiWare. Thus, they went into something and either (a) misunderstood the market (which has been admitted) or (b) didn't do the research or
both (which is my guess).
I also agree with jlrx that this seems like a PR studnt. After all, Beamdog is really a small player in the software distribution over the web (akin to a mini Steam) than a full developer.
What I see here are bad business decisions and a lack of tact by Beamdog. I also see an outdated and outmoded game service by Nintendo -- but one which Beamdog should have known about going in.

I'll confess my ignorance on this point, and ask you what these titles are. |
I'm not aware of any source of accurate WW numbers - once in a blue moon you see something. But we know games like Tetris consistently sell well. Why? It's known and needs no marketing. The poker game that was one of the original ww titles sold stongly for a long time. Was it good? No. Was it marketed? No, not at all. No one knew it existed until it appeared on WW. But again, people know poker. Other games that were good and got some marketing underperformed (from what will we know) like Jungle Speed. Generally, with the notable exception of World of Goo the majority of WW games that do appear on top 10 lists (when we see them and I haven't seen any in ages) are mostly commonly known titles or immediately obvious like Dr. Mario, Sonic, Tetris, Pokemon Ranch, My Aquarium, Wild West Guns, Midnight Pool, TV Show King, Blackjack, etc. Problem here is too few Wii owners seem to know what a MDK2 is. Nor would many be bothered to look at the poor write-up on Wii Shop Channel to find out. It likely would have faired a lot better a lot earlier in Wii's life when many more 'core' gamers were still actively using it.
As far as marketing, those titles that did sell well generally had little to no marketing as well.
Getting paid after 100 paid downloads => Better than Nintendo 6.000 Requirement
A certification progress of only months => Better than Nintendo's 9 months
A limit that is more than 40mb => Better than Nintendo's 40 MB...
So while would you anyway want to develop a game for Nintendo when others don't have that standards? Plenty of devs who hoped to see atleast a few thousand sales ended up making a popular game that sold 100.000 units or more..

Then do explain to me how every single shooter released on WiiWare so far has easily suprassed the 6,000 threshold except for MDK2. |
First off, back that statement up. Prove that every single shooter on WW far surpassed 6,000 and then I will explain it. Just because no one complained doesn't mean they were successful.

If you cared to read the thread correctly, you would know that the 9months was their fault. had to be resubmitted a few times. Most developers who know what they are doing, take 2months tops.
The other two points a moot as they new the terms and conditions.

I can only back it up from my talks with other WiiWare developers. And none they knew of any that had problems hitting the 6,000 unit mark. Most of them said they got their first cut not too long after launch so hitting 6k apparently isn't that difficult.

Far from conclusive but fair enough. In my opinion, the issues with MDK2 are:
A) The name - Unlike most WW shooters where it's clear from the name it's a shooter, absolutely nothing can be derived from MDK2. This is compounded by the less than adequate write-up and pics in the Wii Shop channel. Even a look at the cover or a couple images fail to convey what the game is. Worse, it's not really a shooter in the traditional sense.
B) Timing - Most Wii owners who might like this game (IE: know what it is) have moved onto HD systems and are not checking WW for anything like this anymore. Also predominately, Wii is a dancing game system nowadays with Just Dance and Zumba being the only titles selling consistantly well. These new Wii owners couldnt care less about MDK2. WW is also flooded with tons of titles now making it easy to get overlooked.
C) Price - If this was priced at $15 (which I suspect to keep it in line with PC but I haven't checked that), that's a hard sell on WW where most titles are $5-$10. World of Goo did it, but WoG got lots of great press, FF did it, but it's FF!. Again, by the time MDK2 came out, very few sites were bothering to review WW games anymore so no press and few reviews to justify that price.
D) Lack of marketing - They were probably overconfident in the license. MDK2 was never that big to begin with and Wii's audience is mainly casual. To expect enough people to know the game from it's glory days and want to buy it again was perhaps misguided. Probably on any console but especially Wii. However a WW demo would probably do wonders for their sales. Wonder why they haven't tried that instead of whining like cry babies.
