I'll confess my ignorance on this point, and ask you what these titles are. |
I'm not aware of any source of accurate WW numbers - once in a blue moon you see something. But we know games like Tetris consistently sell well. Why? It's known and needs no marketing. The poker game that was one of the original ww titles sold stongly for a long time. Was it good? No. Was it marketed? No, not at all. No one knew it existed until it appeared on WW. But again, people know poker. Other games that were good and got some marketing underperformed (from what will we know) like Jungle Speed. Generally, with the notable exception of World of Goo the majority of WW games that do appear on top 10 lists (when we see them and I haven't seen any in ages) are mostly commonly known titles or immediately obvious like Dr. Mario, Sonic, Tetris, Pokemon Ranch, My Aquarium, Wild West Guns, Midnight Pool, TV Show King, Blackjack, etc. Problem here is too few Wii owners seem to know what a MDK2 is. Nor would many be bothered to look at the poor write-up on Wii Shop Channel to find out. It likely would have faired a lot better a lot earlier in Wii's life when many more 'core' gamers were still actively using it.
As far as marketing, those titles that did sell well generally had little to no marketing as well.
