The original came out way back in 97 on PC and 98 on PS (they also released a Mac version in 98 but that doesn't really matter). While I heard of the game from then and I heard about the sequel when it came out on WiiWare, I just never got around to buying it. I am glad now after seeing how people in the company act. To my knowledge the first game was good (I never played it but remember it having good reviews) but it never was a huge breakout success. Anyways, I was trying to just state that not many Wii owners probably even heard about this game (the original or the sequel). I bet most gamers never even played the original version.
Nintendo isn't completely innocent since they could have done more to promote the game such as offer free demo, videos, etc. They are doing this on the 3DS Shop though considering every title has a video attached to it and they are allowing a decent amount of demos. To think MDK2 was going to be successful as a title like World of Goo on the WiiWare was just wishful thinking. The fact that they couldn't even get word of mouth to help sales past 6,000 shows their failure.
