Of the launch models and up until summer of 2008. After summer 2008 they made them tanks. There is little to no YLOD FAT consoles produced after summer 2008. Much like the 360, where they get it very reliable with jaspers and tonaskets (late 2008 through summer 2010) the same happened with the latest FAT revisions on the PS3.

Sure, the later models are much much more reliable. But we are talking 2-3 years before they even launched. And if you want that backwards compatible PS3 model, you have to deal with the unreliable model.
Edit - It was also only SOME of the 2008-2009 revised fat PS3 models that were more reliable.

You are probably pointing to the CECHQxx and CECHMxx, but those were produced in very limited quantities and only for Japan and UK respectively. They were produced only for the bundles with " Final Fantasy 7 " and " 300 " the movie, respectively. So it's pretty much irrelevant to include those as argument. Almost all of the sold units after the summer 2008 were the better revisions with 65/65nm chips. " Some " means like 20-30% out of all, where in reality it's close to 100% out of all were revised models - 65/65nm. Other than that, yes, the backward compat models were unreliable and very noisy.
