Am I missing something or is this just completely wrong? Looking at the weekly chart index shows the 3DS way above these numbers for those weeks and actually quite similar to how the Switch is doing currently.

Yep they are wrong. Here are the weeks before and after the successor released for the 3DS and DS:

Week 3DS DS Switch
1 105,360 92,318 109,744
2 36,735 35,970 57,846
3 28,735 25,305 47,574
4 25,992 24,792 45,339
5 27,264 26,104 44,357
6 26,754 25,278 43,681
7 21,820 21,096 40,019
3DS launch 22,389 19,605 39,188
Switch launch 25,758 17,647 45,198
10 23,827 14,144 37,853
11 44,821 14,904 27,911
12 42,754 19,166 30,518
13 33,476 20,046 30,504
14 25,738 17,695 35,058
15 23,916 14,789 25,047
16 22,397 12,247 25,421
17 22,754 15,277 25,096
18 26,175 17,225 30,988
19 16,912 8,935 29,710
20 17,132 8,436 24,478
21 17,762 8,746 N/A
22 15,897 8,829 N/A
Switch 2 launch 14,989 8,869 N/A
24 14,738 9,469 N/A
25 14,523 8,173 N/A
26 15,442 8,313 N/A

Or in other words both consoles don't drop to their new base lines (around 15k and 8-9k respectively) until about 2 months after the launch of the successor.

Edit: Switch added. I wasn't sure if I had to add the week ending Jan 4th, since it's week included in the last year according to VGChartz (because of aligning with NPD) but it's numbers are similar to the first week of 3DS and DS for those years too, so I included it here.
