Need to see it officially released.
I tested leaked DLSS5 with a "One Click Installer" thing, couldn't really change any settings other than turning it on and off.
What I used basically just changed the colour tone, added some ambient occlusion and sharpened textures. It did look better but wasn't a mind blowing result.
Officially releases specifically tailored to a game will be better and I'll judge it then.
It has great potential if used smartly and not used like a sledgehammer.
I've tried it on my PC using DLSS 5 Swapper. It's really hit or miss depending on the game you use it on.
Tried it on some cartoonish games like Hi-Fi rush and a Hat in time, didn't really do much beside desaturate the colors a bit. big miss.
But then i tried it on Final Fantasy XIV. My jaw hit the fucking floor.
Seriously it made it look like a next generation MMO. It feels like my game got turned into a CGI cutscene. I don't mind playing the game like this from now on. though it seems to default to 40fps regardless of my settings.
I Also tried it in Oblivion Remastered. I think it looks good. It kind of reminds me of one of those cheesy 80's fantasy movies. I kind of like the overall mood it gives to the Oblivion Realms. The performance was surprisingly good i think it was hovering around 60fps for me but I was using Frame gen though.
I definitely think it benefits games going for a more realistic or semi-realistic style. though that might be because this version of DLSS 5 was made specifically for NBA 2k27 which is going for more realistic visuals. I'm curious to see if we'll get different versions that cater more to cartoonish art styles.
Against my better judgement, I also downloaded DLSS5 and booted up FFXIV. It makes my GPU suffer.
Without DLSS5 below:

Unless it's anything resembling a human face. It all looks worse even the pics above. Just turns them into AI slop faces.

Here's Some Elden Ring Slop
In all seriousness I think DLSS 5 actually enhances this games visual style. It sure as hell makes a bigger difference than adding Ray-Tracing to the game.

It's been nice to see some reasonable nuanced coverage of it the past few days after that being very rare till recently. I've already shared multiple FH6 videos showcasing it but it works so well there a third can't hurt. Its truly an insane difference and with this video well on its way to a million views I think it'll do a decent bit at changing general perception of the tech in a positive way. Hopefully Playground Games adds an official implementation in the coming months.
The biggest flaw by far right now is of course the performance though lighting that realistic only having about a 50% FPS penalty is still bonkers and considering it needed two 5090's back in March if optimization keeps improving by the time the RTX 6000 series and DLSS 5.5 or 6 is out it could very well be a no brainer option to turn on in many games.
AMD better be cooking up something good enough in response cause this should be a major selling point for Rubin like how ray tracing didn't really start catching on in a big way till Ampere. The first iteration of this tech is even better than I thought it'd be and is already vastly more impressive than early examples of ray tracing in games so I expect big things from neural rendering in the coming years.
Last edited by Norion - 1 day agoHit and miss indeed. Neither is rare though, and when it's good, it's really good. I like what I'm seeing in this thread so far, feels like it's probably hitting the intended vibes pretty well. Obviously I've seen some pretty jarring results as well, just not in this thread yet.
One aspect that's not discussed regarding DLSS 5 often, though, is how it makes things look like movies. Yes, it makes things look realistic, almost photorealistic even, but it also often gives them that vibe often found in modern movies. Personally that aspect of the look is something I don't like, because I associate modern movies with being too calculated products, and that probably includes the overall look as well. It's unnaturally good. Still, for many games, this is a great improvement over what they're without DLSS 5. As someone that's noticed this aspect, it's pretty funny how everyone keeps saying AI slop, when they're probably praising all the movies that look very much the same.

I think one of the problems is people over applying the effect in many videos and images. Using multi-pass DLSS 5 x2 or x3 which results in a very ugly effect along with using it in games it was never meant for.
