Hit and miss indeed. Neither is rare though, and when it's good, it's really good. I like what I'm seeing in this thread so far, feels like it's probably hitting the  intended vibes pretty well. Obviously I've seen some pretty jarring results as well, just not in this thread yet.

One aspect that's not discussed regarding DLSS 5 often, though, is how it makes things look like movies. Yes, it makes things look realistic, almost photorealistic even, but it also often gives them that vibe often found in modern movies. Personally that aspect of the look is something I don't like, because I associate modern movies with being too calculated products, and that probably includes the overall look as well. It's unnaturally good. Still, for many games, this is a great improvement over what they're without DLSS 5. As someone that's noticed this aspect, it's pretty funny how everyone keeps saying AI slop, when they're probably praising all the movies that look very much the same.

I think one of the problems is people over applying the effect in many videos and images. Using multi-pass DLSS 5 x2 or x3 which results in a very ugly effect along with using it in games it was never meant for.

If you mean the slider I've seen in a bunch of videos, that too has been a bit of hit and miss in my opinion. I think it can certainly look great, but it also definitely contributes to that movie-kind of look that I mentioned. I hope we get more official implementations soon, because it'll probably yield the best results in most cases (more or less).

Looking at a proper developer implementation in the latest DF video, it's looking good. It needs to have a little bit less of a performance hit, though.

Holy foooook.

Next big leap in graphics at no developer cost. "Ugh, I hate it". People will never be happy.

Do you not understand Cyberpunk as a setting? Making it cleaner and brighter is like making Mario look like those Unreal 4 realistic fan tech demos as a game. It takes the cyber and the punk out of cyberpunk. Cyberpunk is high tech, low life. It's dirty. Grimey. The environment is near death and cities are in disrepair. Resources are small and monetized. That is the genre.

Are we even looking at the same video? Judging by your description, it's hard to believe we are.

So far, to me at least, faces pretty much always seem to look like AI slop with DLSS5. Environments are hit and miss. I find grading to be, in majority of cases, terrible compared to original image, like what modern Hollywood is pushing in last decade or so, making image look cheaper. Performance hit is insane. Yet, combined pipeline of RT and neural rendering is probably the future (at least near), unless some major shift happens (which it just might, if something like what Bolt is doing comes to fruition).

The DF piece on it pretty much sums it up. It looks terrible when maxed out and its fixed cost of 10ms on average make it essentially useless for what it does. It is however interesting how will different games with official implementation look like. Maybe if it did more than screen space it would be what people make it out to be?

edit: there absolutely is a "developer cost" to it in order to get plausible effects. Otherwise it's just a slop filter leaving the geometry and such untouched

I saw one from Hogwarts Legacy and it looked amazing.

I think they're going from the thumbnail, maybe also the first few seconds. The former in particular would be a bit embarrassing, since that scene, if anything, looks a bit less washed out with DLSS5.

There are significant changes in the tone mapping in that video, so some textures look brighter, but it goes both ways, and some also look darker.
