Just Finished: Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (Switch)
I've been meaning to play this for a while. I enjoyed Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D on the 3DS. Playing Tropical Freeze on the Switch was way more comfortable. I mostly played it in portable mode but also experienced it on the big screen from time to time. The game is a solid 2D platformer. The level design is mostly good, sometimes frustrating, and every now and then approaches the sublime. Cliffslide Slide is an all time great level. Visually the game doesn't really impress. The game plays pretty much the same as Returns. The Snowmads are pretty uninteresting as enemies. I'm glad the boss fights are more complex than just jumping on top of them three times but that doesn't mean they are all fun to play. At points the game is needlessly difficult, requiring precision timing and a little bit of luck to get past the tricky bits. I probably enjoyed it as much as Return but as a sequel it is disappointing. There are hardly any new or differentiating features. Overall the game feels unambitious. The music is pretty good. I have to say I'm a tad bit disappointed because so many people speak highly of this game, especially on this site. I've often heard this game cited as one of the best 2D platformers of its era. To those people I say: I'm going to need y'all to take a seat and put some respect on the name of Rayman Legends.
Score: 7/10

Just Finished: Lego Horizon Adventures (PS5)
I probably would have bought and played this game eventually, but since it was given away as PS Plus game I played it that way. Previously I had only played the original Horizon game on PS4, which I liked quite a bit. I also am fond of Lego games. However, I still find this an odd pairing of IPs. In some ways, Horizon's focus on mechanical animals makes it a good fit for Lego but on the other hand the most successful Lego games were based on recognizable IP. The Horizon Zero Dawn story doesn't lend itself to the Lego treatment. Of course Aloy was mostly alone during Zero Dawn so this game has to stretch things in order to give her suitable co-op companions. The visuals are bright and appealing enough. The voice acting is strange. This game plays fast and loose with the original story and makes it kid friendly. It was confusing to follow. The biggest problem with the game is bland level design. None of the levels standout, they all sort of blend into each other. Some light platforming and exploration and frankly clunky combat. The game is surprisingly deep though with an upgrade and level up systems that are to progress through. There is also so many unlockables to spend your studs on. The different weapons and gadgets can be fun once you learn how to use them properly. I played through the game's story twice, once in co-op and once solo. In co-op only the host's save file saves properly and earns trophy. That is why I played the game a second time. The game is definitely as bad as some make it out to be. It's just bland and repetitive. Sometimes the combat can feel unfair when too many enemies gang up on you. Horizon is one franchise seems to have a lot of faith in. Not a bad way to spend 15 hours. I still have to play Forbidden West and Call of the Mountain.

Vampire Crawlers and Ball X pit. I was thinking I'd like Ball X Pit more but turns out Vampire Survivor devs are just extremely talented at what they do, it's a dungeon crawling card game and it is pure dopamine. It's probably not going to last gor half as long and is double the price of VS and it's probably gonna get old sooner but it's a joy.
Ball X Pit is good but it's more of a one run and done type deal.
