There's this weird 2 way mindset with gamers where you have one side, those arguing about whether a game costs too much.

Then on the other side, there are gamers who mindlessly spend hundreds/thousands of dollars on a single game.

I was talking to a group of friends after the Direct and they were saying how Nintendo has lost their minds charging $80 for MK World, and then I reminded each of them that they all spent $300 each on heirlooms in Apex Legends. FOR ONE FUCKING CHARACTER!! And they had a model to where that was all they spent instead of $400

I got on to them asking how Apex Legends is worth $300 (in reality they've actually spent a lot more) yet Mario Kart World isn't worth $80?

Whoever spent that much on Apex Legends is guilible, and Mario Kart World is still too expensive for what it offers. That's why I said they need twice the courses they said were included so far, same with Battle Mode options.

That's just one example. But that's what a lot of gamers spend. From mobile games, gacha games, live service games (CoD, Fortnite, Sports games, GTA, League of Legends) or even MMO's that require a monthly subscription to play, the overwhelming majority of the gaming landscape spends a lot of additional money on games.

We've basically become the minority of the gaming industry lol. I'm still planning on holding off until Nintendo says what their plans are for DLC.

Hopefully free updates, for what the base game costs.

Indie titles are always cheaper, and for good reason, yet some of them have more content than major studio releases.

Not to mention more original, more interesting and more creative.

Yeah, this is a problem with human psyche that is used shamelessly by the companies: upfront payment is seen as worse as step-by-step payments after you already invested in an environment. I think the upfront-payment is more fair and easier to understand. Yet psychologically it looks worse.

I think most of the people complaining about $80 Mario Kart are the kind to either buy consoles at launch. In which case Mario Kart is actually 40-50 since you would get it in a bundle. Or they weren’t going to buy anyway and just like to complain.

Personally I am willing to spend 80 for some games, Zelda, 3D Mario, Gta 6, Fable. But it’s a pretty small group.

Edit: This doesn’t mean the general audience cannot also feel like the pricing is too high. But online discourse doesn’t tell me anything one way or the other.

I'm not willing to spend that much in CAD for some games. Tears of The Kingdom was an exception for me because of how much value I knew I would get from it. Mario Kart World has yet to prove that it will give me the same value.

Bellular News looks at the pricing situation and I think has a fair take:

I've probably spent around that amount on Path of exile as well (a free to play game)... for stash tabs, cosmetics ect.
I guess it depends on if you can see your self putting like 2000+ hours into it (or many more).
Like if you believe Mario Kart world, will consume you, and your gaming habits for years to come.... yes obviously 80$ is okay.

I think most people just don't see Mario Kart that way.

I've probably spend well over $1000 on Everquest in subscription costs and expansions. $15 a month + 8 expansions in 4 years. And that's not including dial up internet and phone costs in the early years. Yet at an hourly rate it's peanuts.

Something like MKW you don't play for 40 hours a week though.

I've only ever bought a few 'cosmetics' for Elite Dangerous. After I got back to the game after a year's pause I screwed up (getting used to the controls again) and lost 9 months of survey data. I appealed to the better nature of the mod team and they restored me to an earlier state. So I spend some money on cosmetics to reward customer service.

It's true. Mario Kart isn't as consuming as Smash, Splatoon or Zelda.

Nice video, thanks for the link. This aligns with my earlier point that the launch strategy targets the upmarket segment, driven by the higher perceived value of things and the limited console supply at launch. Later on they have to address the broader market, following the "typical" console lifecycle of decreasing prices... which we have not seen this past gen (with consistent or even increasing prices).

A new generation launch windows generally comes with premium prices due to limited availability, which also fuels scalping.
