There's this weird 2 way mindset with gamers where you have one side, those arguing about whether a game costs too much.
Then on the other side, there are gamers who mindlessly spend hundreds/thousands of dollars on a single game.
I was talking to a group of friends after the Direct and they were saying how Nintendo has lost their minds charging $80 for MK World, and then I reminded each of them that they all spent $300 each on heirlooms in Apex Legends. FOR ONE FUCKING CHARACTER!! And they had a model to where that was all they spent instead of $400
I got on to them asking how Apex Legends is worth $300 (in reality they've actually spent a lot more) yet Mario Kart World isn't worth $80? |
I've probably spent around that amount on Path of exile as well (a free to play game)... for stash tabs, cosmetics ect. I guess it depends on if you can see your self putting like 2000+ hours into it (or many more). Like if you believe Mario Kart world, will consume you, and your gaming habits for years to come.... yes obviously 80$ is okay.
I think most people just don't see Mario Kart that way. |
I've probably spend well over $1000 on Everquest in subscription costs and expansions. $15 a month + 8 expansions in 4 years. And that's not including dial up internet and phone costs in the early years. Yet at an hourly rate it's peanuts.
Something like MKW you don't play for 40 hours a week though.
I've only ever bought a few 'cosmetics' for Elite Dangerous. After I got back to the game after a year's pause I screwed up (getting used to the controls again) and lost 9 months of survey data. I appealed to the better nature of the mod team and they restored me to an earlier state. So I spend some money on cosmetics to reward customer service.
