ICYMI: We've stopped tracking the PS4

VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

Part of the reason for such a big drop year-on-year is due to January 2024 having 5 weeks, while January 2025 has 4 weeks.

In the perfect case scenario. all three manufacturers could go out every month and give us SOLD number (not shipped) from 1st to 31st/30th for every month. That way everything all the time would be, exact, on point, accurate, nice and fair. The reality is different however .. we don't get nothing for xbox, and only shipped numbers from sony and nintendo once per 3 months, and everything else has to be estimated based on different reports for the different regions, and outside Japan and US the estimates have to be collected from I don't know how may 5+ ? 10 + ? 20? different report companies, based on weeks and months that they made on their own mind. ... What a shame!

Website like VGChartz is the perfect place, all in one, for all the sales data, for every of the three manufacturers to come, partnership and start to give out data every month, but I know that the site is not so big, and that will probably not happen. But it would be nice. Everything in one place. The manufacturers of the consoles need site like VGChartz. And of course, so do we, as a gamers, and fans.
