Pointer, add COD and Godfather to that list on Wii.
Graphics were shithouse compared to the other consoles but the fast pace of aiming was insane.
Which do you think is better? | |||

Kwaidd said: Gyro works ok, I guess...but there is nothing like the wii-mote for FPS. People can chuckle all they want at people like myself that played CoD on Wii and WiiU, but the speed and precision was insane. I don't know if I'll ever enjoy playing a CoD on a dual stick controller when it finally does come back to the Nintendo platform. Someone already mentioned these but House of the Dead:Overkill, Dead Space Extraction and RE: Darkside Chronicles were great on rail shooters, that in this guy's opinion, gyro just wouldn't do them justice. Someone mentioned not liking the idea of "having to point at the light bar". That was really not a thing. Sure, you couldn't play facing sideways, but why would ya? As long as you were facing forwards it registered perfectly fine without needing to pinpoint at the bar. |
I wonder if the gyro on the new joycons might be good enough to replace IR. from what the rumor says it might have 9 a nine axis sensor (6axis). 9 axis sensors are whats used for VR, and basically elliminates the need for recalibration mid game since the additional 3 axis magetometer fixes drift and increases precision
I prefer being able to point have my hand pointing anywhere as a starting position. I actually like being able to calibrating it. My favorite is the combination used in Wii motion plus units. Findable with pointer through IR and higher sensitivity with gyro. But If I had to choose I prefer gyro.
For shooters:
IR pointers (+stick for camera) > mouse >>> gyro+sticks > sticks alone

I probably agree to that. Just have to test one of these new vertical mice to make sure.

As others have said, IR allowed for a renaissance in lightgun shooters that just don't play anywhere near as well on modern systems that lack IR, and I miss that.
Likewise, after experiencing games like RE4, Metroid Prime, and Sin & Punishment with pointer aiming, going back to analogue just feels so slow and clunky.
Gyro is at least a lot better than analogue sticks alone in my opinion, which softens the blow a bit.

It doesn't matter how many internal sensors you add. So long as the controller can't tell where it is in relation to the TV, its all a crapshoot.
Mouse > IR > gyro >>>>>>>>>>>>dual analog. Precision v comfort
Wiimote + nunckuk > KBM >>>>>>>>>>>>dualanolog. Comfort, accessibilty v precision

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!
Best I've ever played with was Halo with a bamboo drawing tablet. It was so accurate and felt so natural.
