Forums - Sales - Sony confirms PS2 has sold over 160 million

What was the lifetime sales of the PS2? Not 158m [Update: Between 159.2m and 161.9m]

This is one interesting post from 2018, with some calculations and the famous range 159-162M

Thats an asumption of some random posters. The point is they actually changed an already official confirmed number for ONE DATE TWICE!

in summer 2012 they announced that the PS2 was at 155,1 million units SHIPPED! Thats an ice cold fact! Nobody can question that! In 2019 they changed it to "more than 155 million units sold as of March 31, 2012." Also that is a fact! And its plausible: More than 155 million sold can lead to 155,1 million shipped- a gap of 100k. Old systems don't sell too well so they sell out relativley quickley- fine with that.

But now lets fast forward to november 2024: Sony AGAIN chainged their number: from 155,1 million shipped (2012) over "more than 155 million sold" (2019) to "more than 160 million sold" on the SAME DATE! As of MARCH 31, 2012, the date they announced 155,1 million originally! Anyone sees that and its absolutley incredible that fanboys close their eyes before this fact! If they said march 2013 we could talk about rounding up ok, but NOT announcing 160 million in 2012 but in 2024 when the Switch is probably less than 10 million shy of the PS2's official 155,1 million is just extremly unprofessional and it should have an investigation on Sonys seriosity and if they where hiding any taxes. Its clear they invented a number here just to keep the PS2 Nr.1 because they know like we all do, that the PS5 will never reach the Switch's total!

Yep, I am with you on this one. PS2 has sold more than 155M no doubt about that, since it went to sell for another 10 months after March 2012. How much we don't know, It's clear the number is somewhere around 160M, but exactly 160.000.000 (or over) is a bit strange. No 158M ? No 158.7M ? No 159.2M and No 160.5M for example, but exactly 160.000.000. And the same date, when it was already reported it was 155M as of the very same date, it's very suspicious.

The only thing we know for sure from all of this mess is that to be the undisputed Number 1 selling console the Switch needs to sell at least 162M (since there are many people still let the range for the PS2 reach till 161.9M) the 162M number for the Switch would leave no doubts or debates anywhere.

On this side i am with you and i am a bit surprised but in a quite positive way you even also start questioning the "160 million mark". Where i contradict you, is the 162 million number (It was actually 161,81 million), a made up number out of pure speculation, based on numbers they never announced officially.

158 million, 157 or 156 million all where pure speculation on the fact that people thought "more than 155 million sold PS2s meant 158 million shipped when they "forgot" that 155,1 million was the official shippment number in march 2012.

158 million was never announced from Sony. 155,1 million shipped as of march 2012 is the official number. Starting 155 million you can round up to 160 million, thats fact. But a rounded up number is no shipped/ sold number. 99 is not 100 despite the fact it will be rounded up most times.

Shawn Layden confirmed the PS2 pic is real and the production number is at 160,636,885.

So... will there be adjustments once again on the platforms total page and on the top page of the site ? to 160.6/160.7M ?

The issue is units produced does not equal units shipped/sold. Only reason we used units produced for the PSP is because the last figure Sony released was "More than 76.4 million (As of March 31, 2012)" while the PSP wasn't discontinued until December 2014, so we went with the 82.52M units produced figure for that.

Either way the range for the PS2 is now down to 160,000,001 and 160,636,885. If the Switch hits 160.64M then we know that is #1.

Ooh.. right.

So at least we are getting better over time on the PS2 figures. From debates with low end side at 155.1M to those at the highest possible figures of 161.9M, we are now down to just 160.01 - 160.636.885. Nice, the range get smaller and smaller. What was the page from sony with all the figures ? It may get updated soon again, or at least update the date of March 2012.

That's great and hopefully the goalpost isn't moved again after a certain platform gets closer and closer.

Too bad it won't count. You know, with it being a handheld and all
