Happy new year, everyone c:
Happy New Year! Thanks for another great event!
I've done a summary of my top 50 in previous years' events, so might as well do that again. For anyone interested, here's my top 50.
2024 marked the first time that I had given every game in my top 50 a personal rating of 9.0 out of 10 or higher.
(Games that just missed my top 50)
(I've played some games on multiple platforms, hence why the total doesn't add up to 50)
PC | PS1 | PS2 | PS3 | PS4 | PS5 | Xbox 360 | NES | SNES | Switch |
7 games | 6 games | 4 games | 10 games | 26 games | 6 games | 1 game | 1 game | 1 game | 1 game |
(Series with multiple entries in my top 50)
(going by the original EU release year)
Most represented years in my top 50 are:
(Developers with multiple games in my top 50)
And that's all I can think to mention. Thanks for another great event, and hopefully see you again next year for the same thing.

Back from the mayhem.
9, 5, 2 ,1 were all correctly guessed.
The extremely underrated Digimon games were left unguessed.
8 is Digimon World 2
3 is Digimon World
Digimon World especially has no other game like it and is very ahead of its time in many aspects. But Digimon World 2 is also pretty unique, though it does borrow from other great games heavily.
4 is also unguessed. Nioh 2.
Also very good game. As you can see from my list, I rate it higher than any Souls game. It is difficult like a Souls game but it is much different.
I am too tired from my trip to write more, but maybe my top 10 get some more writing involved during my break later.
I finished my list in the official thread. Newest addition is Deep Rock Galactic at number 38. Gears of War 2 got kicked out of the list.

3DS - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Trilogy) (2005/2014)
Mobile - Yugioh Duel Links (2017)

PC - Borderlands 2 (2012)
PC - Deep Rock Galactic (2020)
In making the list for this thread, I found something really odd. As a hardcore gamer for vast swats of my life, falling off for a few years every now and then but generally keeping at least casual and always on top of news through magazines or the Internet. At 34 and with hundreds of games completed and thousands played, there are only about 70 games I'd even bother to rank on a list, after number 45ish, the scores dip to 9/10 and then and after they dip to 8/10 I could give a fuck less. All those great games that I'd score an 8/10 or good games I'd score a 7/10 become meaningless, just a vague remembering of some time wasted while there are about 30 games that actually meant something and less than 20 that effect me personably and less that effected my life. Like Bloodborne and Sekiro truly effected my life, making me a more patient person and mental gear shaped the vast majority of my interests, The last of us got me resinterested in playibg the guitar something that is now my main hobby outside of gaming but there are so few of these games among so many, some that I can't even remember past the title or the odd image of a scene. If I needed any more incentive to not bother with the 5's and 6's and just quit them instead of continuing on some small thread of fun, this thread gave it to me.
A delayed happy new year to you all! Now that my list is complete (read all about it here) all that's left is to list my other Highlights of the Year as I have a tradition for. However since there were quite a few highlights this last year and I've already written whole articles about some of them as reviews or Late Looks, I'll list those ones with a link to the article and only cover new games here in the thread.
The Minish Cap
Another Zelda game that was on my to-play list for a long time before I finally got around to it, Minish Cap turned out even better than I expected, in fact I would put it close to A Link Between Worlds as the 2 best 2D Zeldas. It’s just well put together, well designed and has just a tad more of that Zelda magic than many other titles in my eyes. And I love the size change mechanic, being able to give the world an extra dimension in a way which gives a whole new perspective. |
Pokémon Snap
So, this isn’t really the first time I’ve played Pokémon Snap, but this last year playing it on NSO was the first time I’ve “owned” it and played it for an extended period of time and I gotta say it’s just such a lovely game. So simple a concept and frankly with so little actual content, but it’s somehow still so enjoyable to sit through the same track again and again to get that one Pokémon you’ve been missing or some better-timed photos for higher points. And the fact that the point awarding is questionable at times is just a part of the fun. |
Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon Age: Origins is different than any other Highlight of the Year I’ve ever listed because, unfortunately, it’s one that I didn’t finish. And that’s not for a lack of trying, it straight up came down to a technical issue with my PC crashing in the game which eventually became so bad that I couldn’t get past the loading screen. It’s frustrating because most of my time with this game was extremely enjoyable, but it also puts it in a bit of a unique situation since it was starting to fall off a little before I had to stop, maybe it was fatigue or maybe the section I had just gotten to was simply the weakest, but either way this means I get to retain a memory where 90 % of what I’ve played is still incredible. As for what happens next, I don’t know if I’ll try to transfer my save to a new PC or wait for an eventual remake/remaster, because with the right small tweaks I think this game could earn a very solid spot on my list in the future. No matter what they have to keep the voice acting though because that is on point. |
Astro’s Playroom
Like probably many others I used to think it was a bit silly when I saw people listing Astro’s Playroom on this list or among their favourite games in general as it was after all a demo game, how good could it be? But obviously it turned out I was wrong there because Astro’s Playroom is really not a demo game, it’s just an incredibly solid small little game packed with joy and fun ideas. It was even so fun that I spent a good number of hours trying to get some decent world ranking placements in the speedrun mode, which is very rarely my cup of tea, but Astro’s Playroom made it fun. A genius level move to include it as a “pack-in” title though because it really is the perfect game to get you hyped about your new machine and, thanks to the fun references galore, PlayStation as a whole. |
Oh and I've also played one more game recently stretching into 2025 that's all but guaranteed to make my list next year, but I'll save that suprise for later.

I usually also list a whole bunch of bonus stats but since my list had a special format (Games Thorughout My Life) this year it would be a bit weird to list which games climbed the list or dropped or stuff like that... But I'll do it anyways!!
New debuts:
Yea, a bit of a slow year for debuts.
Biggest climb and drop:
A perfect match!
Most represented systems:
No suprise that listing 15 games from my childhood gave GC quite a boost.
Most represented decades:
00s reign supreme! I feel a little bad about the 90s but without OoT or Symphony of the Night this year it's a bit limited.
That's all for now! See you all in the results thread....

This game is here almost completely because of the style. And because the main character is a bit of a blunt asshole for a change. The story is okay and the puzzles is so so, but the characters is top of the line in the art style of the characters is best in class. Holding the DS as a book while playing and and interact with the hand drawn inhabitants of the hotel made for a unique experience. I'm glad that things like this game exist. The 3D environments are not that great and to see the characters standing like someone cut out them in large paper lessened the experience some. Not perfect, but best in one thing, and being the best if only for a small part takes you a long way. |
I really like this game, although I love the Another Code series even more. I am unhappy with Nintendo that they let Cing die (and NOA specifically is kinda at fault too, as Hotel Dusk and Another Code - Trace Memory in the US - sold best with the localization in the US, so when Cing made sequels to both they thought that would be work as well, but NOA for some reason didn't publish the two games in the US, even though Nintendo of Europe already had done the localization for the european release, and then Nintendo of Japan could've taken over Cing, as their debts weren't even that high, but they let them die). Anyways, Nintendo now holds the rights and they released Another Code remakes, so maybe this series sees also a new release.

I do not really know why this entry still to me feels like the crown jewel of the Might and Magic series. The best turn based strategy game there is. Even if this is the best it has its fair share of flaws. The fractions are not very balanced and so is not the magic system where quite a few of the lower level magics are better than the some of the highest magic level ones. The focus on gold makes the build path almost always the same - gain as much income buildings as possible. But no matter the few flaws this gem of a game have, the beautiful castles, the sounds, playing defence when someone try to bring your main town down. It has something that is hard to put a finger on for me. I just love this game. It is so far the only game ever that kept me up all night playing. I also set an alarm clock early on Saturday morning just to be able to snatch the family computer before my siblings to play this game. Long live the black dragon! |
I agree. Even though Song of Conquests is pretty good and more modern and the other titles in the series have some differences and I also now played King's Bounty II which has some similarities... I still feel HoMM 3 is the pinnacle in the series. And the best games seldomly are defined by lack of bugs and glitches and imbalances - on the contrary, many beloved games have their fair share of jank. I think to become a great game you need something gripping, some sort of soul as cheesy as it sounds. And HoMM 3 has that. Anyway, great game and even though it is old and a bit harder to play now it still is fun to fire it up from time to time.
I am excited to see how Olden Era turns out, as Olden Era seems to specifically lean strongly on 3 as inspiration.
