Forums - Sales Discussion - PS5 Ships 65.5 Million Units as of September 2024

Good quarter for the PS5. It's continuing to fall behind the PS4 but not to a level that's concerning when the PS5 Pro and 2025 combined will help a lot. Sales could get a little rough in 2026 but the PS6 won't be that far off by then so it'll be whatever.

The 2.2m behind is slightly worrying..... I hope there is room for price cuts at some point in this gen.

Inflation, lack of price cuts, PC gaming on the rise (more expensive but an open platform), Switch's success (doesn't matter that it's not a direct competitor), less cross-gen titles shared between PS3 and PS4 than now, and PS4 Pro launching a year earlier aligned than PS5 Pro.

With all those barriers, it's impressive that PS5 is only about 2.2 million behind. If it ends up 5-10 million units behind, it would still be a big success and possibly more profitable still.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 48 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

I think its down to GTA6 to save PS5.

I hope Sony upped production to have enough ready to go, and not run into stock issues.
They need to take advantage of how much hardware that game can push.
Its supposed to launch in like 6-7 months time right? I hope Sony are stockpiling for it.

GTA 6 not launching till 2026. I bet on it. It will get delayed. In a time where even small titles getting delayed left and right and when numerous previous Rockstar titles have gotten delayed, now GTA 6 will come on time ? I really doubt it.

Therefore PS5 will probably do sales level like this year next year, and 2026 probably do the same or little bit better because of the GTA 6 (otherwise it would go down but GTA will keep it a float. And if there is a price cut in late 2026 let's say it may even go beyond this and next year numbers. Or if they wait till 2027 it may just slow the decline.

In either case it will result in PS5 reaching PS4 I think. Cuz we only have 2018 going ahead into PS4 life, which was a decent year, but after that it quickly declined. If the years till 2027 are somewhat like this year, it will certainly reach PS4 or even beat it by the end.

Considering the pandemic and supply issues and the econonys of the world this is great. On a level playing feild it would be beating PS4.

Eh, I would say the Xbox Series S will be the real winner with GT6. People who buy for one game are going to go for the cheapest avenue, see what collage football did for the S.

Corrected that for you. Only because a prefered system will not get to the LTD sales of another does not make it a "non competitior". Xbox, Playstation and Switch are competitiors.

Why "save" though? The console is a huge hit and except by some retail Armageddon a very certain a 100 million seller, probably even more profitable than PS4 since they are getting higher profit per unit sold

Last gen the comments about the PS4 sales were 100%: "it's amazing, doing great, impressive".

Now the PS5, a more expensive machice with 0 price cuts and actually having price increases, is doing about the same as the PS4 and somehow it needs to be "saved"?

After the Pro people are just deciding the PS5 has no games, and now that it is doing bad on sales? Literally makes no sense.

But that is what a big blunder can do to a product, all it takes is a big bad reaction (Pro reveal) and it ignites a chain effect of absurd stuff going on everywhere. It's unbelieavable how quick it spreads to stuff that have nothing to do with the actual fact in the matter.

By talking about GTA6 to "save" a plattform, you people are aware of the fact, that GTA VI is not an exclusive? GTAV launched in 2013 for the Xbox 360 and the PS3, yet sales where down quite a lot (30%- 40% if i am not mistaken). And that was one of the biggest software launchs of all time.
