Forums - Sales - Astro-Bot or Zelda EoW? Clash of the 2024 September Titans

Which will sell more? Which will perform better with critics?

Astro Bot (Sales & Critical Reception) 20 19.05%

Zelda (Sales & Critical Reception) 36 34.29%

Astro Bot (Sales), Zelda (Critical Reception) 3 2.86%

Astro Bot (Critical Reception), Zelda (Sales) 46 43.81%

Total:105

I wish Sony announced their games sales, don't need to be as often as Nintendo, but as long as any of them sell another 1M they should announce it.

Polyphony Digital used to have Gran Turismo sales on their website and update them, but they only update 10M sales for the series and not individual games anymore, even as their last two games have sold around 15M each, they still won't let us know.

That Insomniac data leak was the only thing that allowed us to know PS4 game sales, even as those numbers were excellent and would be good marketing for the franchises, dunno if we'll have know about the PS5 games.

I think some people are not really grasping the likely sales trajectory of Astro Bot. There are some helpful comparisons though. Crash bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy sold 2.5m copies in its first 3 months, and broke 20m lifetime. It takes Two sold 1m in its first month. It’s now sold 30m+.

Astro Bot has not been as heavily discounted but it’s already shown strong legs. It will likely break 10m. The fact that it’s never been discounted on PSN beyond 25% probably suggests it’s sales have been strong.

It would be nice to get actual updated sales figures for Astro Bot. With strong enough legs it could hit 10 million units, but that's not too probable right now.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 159 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million, then 161 million)

PS5: 116 million (was 105 million, then 115 million, then 122 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Sony has been relatively "stingy" with discounts throughout the generation across virtually all titles. They're conditioning their fans to buy their games expensive compared to prior generations and most 3rd party games. Their sales can decline and they won't care as long as the revenue is up.

But maybe they'll be more generous with Astro Bot, as its default price is $60 and it's been bundled for free for a time. It's probably the kind of game that benefits a lot from heavy discounts.

To add to Kyuu’s point: Third-party sales were certainly a big contributor to the milestones of Crash, Spyro, and ITT. If I were to guess, Switch 1 is probably the platform where Crash did the best being that this is where most of the platformers crowd is at.

Playstation is probably N.Sane's (and possibly Spyro Reignited Trilogy's) biggest platform by a decent if not huge margin as the games were deeply associated with the PS brand and nostalgia. It was also a full PS4 exclusive for a year, pretty sure year 1 was comfortably its biggest year, having sold more on PS4 alone than later years on all platforms combined.

Crash Sold half of its units before it touched Switched. Same with Spyro. Sonic Frontier sold more on playstation than on Switch during 2022. it's possible Switch caught up LT. Generations x Shadow looked closer to 50/50 at launch.

Lego games frequently sell better on playstation than Switch too.

Both Switch and PlayStation have strong platformer audience and I think there is lots of cross ownership which means platform preference sometimes comes down to execution/scale or IP. Similar to JRPGs where HD2D will favour Switch because well it translates to handheld play but AAA affair do better on playstation.

Where are you seeing that? Crash sold half its units before launching on Switch? All I’m seeing is 2.5mil in its first three months, 10mil by February 2019 (NS1 version launched late June 2018). Same question for Sonic Fronteirs.

It probably sold 6-7 million copies before the release of the other versions. So more like a third or less. It had solid legs and a strong holiday season that helped it keep up with Horizon Zero Dawn (sold 7.6 million within a year). It comfortably outsold Horizon in the UK 2017 with a fewer months on the market, but it fell behind in the majority of markets.

If I had to guess the final sales split, it's 52% PS4, 29% Switch, and 19% between Xbox and PC.

For clarity these are just deductions, so not absolute facts

Crash was just hyperbole on my part, I'm just aware it sold a lot before the Switch version released although its not half.

The 2.5m figure from PS4 was in september 2017 & before the holiday where it would of sold a lot more. For example December 2017 it was No.6 in UK boxed charts (all platforms) just from the PS4 version alone and No.10 for the US. Meanwhile in December 2018 (when Switch and Xbox were out) it didn't make top 20 in the UK or US chart. It's sales on Playstation were the biggest contributor towards its 10m milestone.

Come the launch of the Xbox/Switch versions, we have some tibits from the UK and VG Charts Global estimates

"The Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, having released on Xbox One, Switch and PC on June 29th, managed to take No.3 in the charts, with sales for the PS4 version also being up 16 per cent month-on-month. It’s been exactly one year since the PS4 version released so the appeal for the title has certainly faded a bit, with Month One sales on XO, Switch and PC not reaching the heights of the original PS4 release. But they still performed well, with sales on Switch being on a par with sales on Xbox One.

VGCharts global estimated a retail launch of the multiplatform version accordingly (retail only so no digital sales, otherwise Xbox & PC would place higher)

"Breaking down the sales by platform, the game sold best on the Nintendo Switch with 138,741 units sold (61%), compared to 86,401 units sold on the Xbox One (38%) and 672 units on Windows PC (1%)

To compare, the PlayStation 4 version sold 1,034,702 units first week when it launched in June 2017 and has gone on to sell 4.25 million units to date.
"

Again this is just retail and Playstation would of had some strong digital sales, so I think 6-7m is a good estimate for its sales as it hit Switch That's like 30% of its lifetime total and it continued to sell on Playstation. It's more or less a given that PS is it's biggest platform but of course Switch would of contributed a lot as its install base increased. It's low install is why Xbox was able to be competitive at all.

------

Regarding Sonic it's a similar picture of deduction from available sources, looking at its launch alone (released in Nov), so the year wrapped up soon after.

In the UK you have 52% boxed sales on Playstation versus 32% on Switch during launch, by about December this evens out to to around 42-45% on both platforms whilst playstation is going to have a much higher digital ratio compared to Switch 1 especially.

Even in Japan where Switch should have its strongest lead it's almost a 50/50 split

Switch: 26k

PS5- 11k

PS4- 9k

Nintendo/Playstation: 57% Vs 43% at retail.

This is physical only. Again playstation leans more heavily digital compared to Switch.

It would be close but all indicators suggest it launch on Playstation was stronger than Switch. I intentionally mentioned the Switch potentially catching up LT because its sales tend to be less front loaded but for its initial holiday Playstation seems the biggest platform globally. And the point is really just to say Platformers do very comparable on Nintendo & Playstation once you're looking at non-Nintendo IPs. And even then it's only this last gen that I think we've seen a non mario 3D platformer comfortably excel 5m on single piece of hardware (Kirby Forgoten Land & Crash trilogy)
