Forums - Sales - Astro-Bot or Zelda EoW? Clash of the 2024 September Titans

Which will sell more? Which will perform better with critics?

Astro Bot (Sales & Critical Reception) 20 19.05%

Zelda (Sales & Critical Reception) 36 34.29%

Astro Bot (Sales), Zelda (Critical Reception) 3 2.86%

Astro Bot (Critical Reception), Zelda (Sales) 46 43.81%

Total:105

Astro Bot really deserved better sales.

Nice to see Echoes of Wisdom do well though, cool little game. We'll probably never get another update on it sadly, but theoretically if it was at 4.09m last March, I would say 6m lifetime could be reachable.

It would be great if Astro sold 10m but it's done amazingly well for what is essentially a new IP and platformer. Even on Switch, platformers do not sell 5m unless it's a recognised IP from Nintendo themselves like Mario/Kirby/Donkey Kong etc.

Unfortunately we don't have numbers to work with outside of Japanese physical sales but we have good reason to believe Astro will hit a minimum 5m LT. Which is what Crash Bandicoot 4 sold across 5  platforms. Almost double the most recent Sonic game on all platforms.

The only non remake to perform better has been It Takes Two.

I'm excited to see where the franchise can go from here.

Oh yeah I didn't mean to downplay its sales or imply it did badly, just would've been cool if its sales matched its quality.

Rayman will sell well because Ubi is going to slash the price to like $10USD across all platforms (PC being the most notable). Astro at its steady $60USD price tag could never compete.

Also, I personally do not believe this battle is done. As you said, GotY winners have strong legs— Just look at the most recent week of JP sales for Astro, sitting as the only PS5 software in top ten IIRC. In due time, whether it be through a data breach (e.g. like what happen with Insomiac not too long ago) or a new credible outlet emerging (e.g. CESA), the truth should be revealed in due time whether Astro or Zelda pulled ahead.

...Though Zelda hitting 4.09M as of March 31st 2025 is admittedly a pretty high bar to overcome for a 3D platformer on a system with a *very* small platformer consumer base. My guess is Zelda will be looking at possibly upwards of 6M LTD whereas Astro could be anywhere from 3M to 8M... which okay maybe this battle is kinda over lol. IDK I'm still holding out hope for Astro: It's never wise to bet against a GOTY winner.

Japan is a good reference for Astro.

At the point at which it was reported to have sold 1.5m (the only official figure from Sony), it had only sold 30k in Japan. It's now passed 100k and this physical only (game was understocked during its first week) That's more than a 3x multiple despite not featuring in the top 30 for most of the year.

I don't think we have any idea how Astro has sold. It reappeared in most global charts this past Christmas (2025)...It could be at 3m but likely is a lot higher than that. If we extrapolated on Japanese numbers it's around 5m lol

Yeah I'm inclined to believe we won't know with 100% accuracy until we get updated numbers by both parties.

Look at how poor quality something like Pokemon games are, compared to other titles today.
Yet it sells millions and millions.

Quality of a product doesn't equal sales.... it usually does have a impact on sales though.

There are gameplay and story elements that are subpar as well.... its in all sense of the case, mid or below mid games.
However people love Pokemon, grew up watching the shows as kids... and now collect the Cards as a way of investment (more so than even play with them). Its like a pyramid scheme... betting on the future success of the IP (cards) and a investment thingy.

If not managed well, it could all fall apart, and your left with cards you paid tons for, that are actually worth next to nothing.

This feels like a response to an argument I never made.

I don't see why Pokemon is relevant in this discussion, its not Pokemon's fault that Sony has built an ecosystem where people mostly only care about Fortnite, CoD, EA Sports as well as AAA cinematic games.

The flip of that, would be to say something like "I wish pokemon matched the quality of its sales".

That was basically what I did... and plenty of Nintendo fans have done so too, before.
Why is that not revelant to the discussion?

I also wanted to point out that quality doesn't equate to sales.
Some games can be great and still flop, and vice versa.

But your right, Astrobot is a good game, and should have sold more.
The poster above is right too, platformers arn't as big on Playstation as other places.

Not wanting to encourage the obvious console warring on both sides but platformers perform well on Playstation, as does every genre. That's not an issue.

Sonic Frontiers sold better on PS5 than on Switch for example. Astro's sales are good. Them not reaching the height of Sonys AAA affair is no different from Kirby not reaching Mario numbers. It shouldn't be expected lol

Back to the OP: Both games will sell a very similar amount either way 5-6m. I think its likely Astro will beat out Zelda based on legs when all is truly said and done. Echoes hasn't been in a any charts since it's initial launch month whereas Astro frequently returned throughout 2025, almost reached top 10 again in November (UK) which is one of the most competitive months, a whole year after launch, reached 12 in US/Canada download charts December 2025 (busiest software month and also a year later) and is now randomly top 10 in Japan (where it tripled its last visible sales). It's legs are weird but they're clearly strong. Probably we won't get an update til Astro 2 is announced.

Current Sony tends to not officially announce the sales figures of most games with sub 10 million trajectory. Ratchet and Clank passed 7 million, Blooborne and Days Gone 8 million, and GT Sport 13 million, but we learned these numbers from the Insomniac leaks as opposed to anything official. So I don't know if we're ever getting sales updates for Astro Bot.
