I'd say "The Fly" (1986) has the most impressive visual effects, followed by "Hellraiser" (1987) and "The Thing" (1982). The practical effects peaked in the 80's. I'm not a fan of CGI. You just see it's not real and then it's not believable.

Honestly, I don't think any looked better than the effects in the Star Wars Trilogy (pre-Special Edition). The puppetry, models, and visual tricks they implemented were revolutionary.

His puppetry and costume was really above and beyond also from them we have Labyrinth in 1986 and The Witches from 1990 those really gave me the chills when i was a kid unlike the new movie.
