Practical effects.
Hm. The Thing is definitely the poster child of classic SFX. In more modern examples you can basically pick your favorite Christopher Nolan stunt setpiece. I'm pretty partial to the hallway fight from Inception.
For me, Aliens takes the crown.
Released just a few years prior to the dawn of the CG era, it makes great use of puppetry, miniatures, and other practical techniques to achieve a wide range of effects scenes that still hold up well today.
The Thing easily wins that one. Just a year earlier you had another great one with Clash of the Titans. When it comes to earlier films Jason and the Argonauts is the gold standard.
