The broom closet ending was my favorite.

"What do you mean we never put the game on consoles?"

15) *picks flower petals* "I know my past. I don't know my past. I know my past. I don't know my past..."

It takes an earthquake for you to finally find the answer.

14) Gravity is nothing before the might of a horse.

Your special ability is to yell.

13) This game involves significantly more paddling than previous entries in the series.

12) Probably the worst one competetively, but I sure like it nonetheless.

12. Super Smash Bros. Brawl?

13) One of this game's many emotional moments features an interesting take on a Gilbert and Sullivan song (from The Pirates of Penzance).

The song is the Major General song, but this character changes it to suit his own race and profession. The character feels guilty about one of his past actions and works hard to atone for it.

Pillars of Eternity is a throwback to the old Infinity games, including Baldur's Gate, but with newer technology. This was pitched for crowdfunding and became one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns for gaming. That is how much people loved the idea to get a new Infinity game. It probably helped, that Obsidian was founded by people who formerly worked at Black Isle.

Same as in the old Infinity games, you move your party through gorgeous environments and interact in many ways with the environment and characters. The game is an RPG, with pause-based gameplay. Which means the fight is going on and you can give commands, but you can pause if you want to give more detailed commands. Back then Baldur's Gate had a D&D-license, but for Pillars of Eternity Obsidian developed their own gaming system.

The story features a world of Eora in turmoil. Some years ago an event called the Saints War saw a person claiming to be the god Eothas lead a war, but he was eventually killed leaving worshippers of Eothas in doubt. Many children are born without a soul, these are called Hollowborne and the epedemic of these happening is causing fear. Some magicians called animancers experiment with transferring souls, often resulting in the creation of monsters. You play the watcher, a person who can sense souls.

The game was so successful, Obsidian made a successor, Pillars of Eternity 2.

Awakening is one of the reasons why the 3DS is a fantastic system. I like tactics titles and therefore I like Fire Emblem, and Awakening surely is a great Fire Emblem title. Probably a reason why Sakurai included a whole bunch of characters from this games in Smash.

Awakening follows the story of Chrom and his warriors as they fight against the quite of bunch of problems cropping up over time. Your characters becomes their tactician as you control the whole team on the battlefield. The story stretches over multiple years, but also includes the time traveling children of the characters you play, as they come back in time to avoid the dark future.

The game has the tactics gameplay the series is known for and works the formula well. You have some specialties through the teamups. The presentation is pretty good and still helps to keep a good overview of the battle (which is in my opinion very important for this kind of tactical gameplay).

As this game was a very successful title it helped to bring the series more into the spotlight.

In a way you can call the Deus Ex series "Transhumanism: The Game". I am not aware of any other game series, that has transhumanism so much as a core theme. And this theme is integrated with the gameplay, as your abilities are brought on by technical enhancements of your body. On the story side, the game explores the societal impact of the availability of technology that enables transhumanism. This all makes an very exciting package.

I played Human Revolution as the Director's Cut on WiiU, but it is available on many platforms. The gameplay is an mix of action adventure, shooter and stealth, with RPG-elements to advance your character. That works splendid.

One element of the game that makes it so great is the big amount of possible solutions to one problem. Problem: you want to enter the police headquarters. What are your options? Well, you can sweet talk the guy at the entrance to let you in. You can crawl through the ventilation shafts like the Alien. Or you can go into the police station with guns blazing, like the Terminator. Or you hack your way in, like a Shadowrunner. All options are valid and possible. This gives you as the player a lot of influence.

Your actions have consequences. That is made clear in the beginning, as the hostages die if you take too long. Or that oyur pilot dies, if you don't invest a lot effort to help her escape. This is all not influencing the story too much, but it feels impactful. Great work Eidos!

And it's not too long until 2027, the year the game is set.

16) Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos

It's a real shame to see what the RTS genre has become in the last decade, when you think of the extraordinary heights it was capable of achieving 18 years ago. Blizzard are the unquestioned masters of the genre but WoW and Overwatch seem to be dominating their attention.

There are a lot of things I really like about Warcraft III. The worldbuilding is incredible and Azeroth feels deep and fully realised even though you only ever see small vignettes of it; to be fair to Blizzard an MMO was a natural extension of their achievement. Each of the races feels unique and plays completely differently, and you get a strong sense of the motivations driving each of the leading cast. The low army limits and numerous unit abilities mean that you take a much closer perspective than in many strategy games, playing each unit to their strengths rather than just doomstacking your opponents with overwhelming force. And of course, it looked and sounded amazing for a game of its generation. I only wish the remaster had been done with a little more care; I would have loved to get back into the game.

15) Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect was fun and had a lot of heart, but it was the sequel that I think really cemented this series as among the RPG greats. It feels like more of a shooter and slightly less of an RPG than its predecessor, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing; the ability system feels way tighter and has better synergy; the upgrades are much cleaner; the combat just has a bit more oomph. It's more linear, which is a shame, but makes up for this with a much tighter focus on Shepard and his companions; indeed a substantial portion of this game is just getting recruiting and getting to know your crewmates and endearing yourself to them by going through their quest chains. In so doing, you learn a huge amount about the game's setting and universe but from a very personal perspective. In between the action-packed and hugely plot-driven ME1 and 3, this game slows down a lot and becomes a lot more pensive. It's an interesting strategy in a trilogy, but I think it works.
