Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Phil Spencer On Bethesda Deal, Series X/S Launch, And More

MS will offer multiple ways to play Bethesda games. XBox series consoles, PC, XCloud, and all supported with the value of gamepass. They do not need to put their games on PS5 to make this acquisition well worth their time, and you are lying to yourself if you think they do. Remember they are not just looking to sell consoles, they are building up their brand to the next level as we move into a more digital focused time. Leaving it off the PS5 will help bring people to that brand one way or another, and that is their goal. The people who would opt to not play the games if they really wanted to anyway will be a vocal minority that would rather be bitter about it not coming to their plastic box of choice. There are more than enough ways to play these games without the PS5 being a factor.

I mean, Sony could always allow XCloud on the PS5. But that still expands the XBox brand and Sony will never allow it anyway. MS owns Bethesda, they can do whatever they want with the games. Some people need to learn to accept that.

This idea that MS is in a hurry to recoup the 7.5 billion they invested in this purchase, and as such, would never keep big Bethesda games off PS, is completely delusional. MS is trying to turn GamePass into the Netflix of gaming. They're very open about this goal. They know it's not going to happen overnight, just as they know that the road to that goal isn't paved with big profit. We can look to counterparts outside of the gaming space for this. Disney is well aware that Disney+ isn't likely to be profitable for another 3-4 years. The point of these ventures, is that once you reach a certain point, you start making money hand over fist. And the gaming space doesn't have that behemoth service the likes of Netflix yet, so whoever gets there first is going to be in a massive position of power within the market. That's what MS is working toward. The only way you're going to see future Bethesda games on PS, is if Sony allows GamePass on their platform in some meaningful capacity. Anything else simply doesn't make business sense for what MS wants to accomplish.

Yea I doubt MS spent $7.5 Billion on Bethesda so they can continue to port games on their competitor's platform. Hell Bethesda was going to port most of their games to both platforms anyway and it would be much cheaper for MS to sign exclusivity deals than to buy the entire company. Obsidian has given us a taste when MS wants to do with their development studios imo where you had Outer Worlds being released on multi-platform as it was finishing up but Grounded and Avowed going to be MS exclusive.

7.5 Billion is a lot and they obviously will need to recoup that at some point but Microsoft's goal isn't about making profits from their Xbox division right now. If it was, they wouldn't be putting all their newly released games + 100s others on gamepass that can be had for $1 or Put the Series X, Gamepass Ultimate, Xcloud and EA Play as part of a juicy Xbox All Access deal. Imo their goal is to become that Netflix of gaming and Netflix lost a lot of money until it eventually became so big that it's causing the traditional Cable Companies to bleed. Whether or not MS is successful remains to be seen.

I find it funny that just the possibility of bethesda games continue to be on sony platforms makes some people lose sleep at night, then it comes some news saying sony will have a deal with a publisher to make some costumes in a game exclusive to playstation and its "shit on anticonsumer sony time !!!"

I'm fairly certain it's the other way around.

Or it's mostly people "trying" to provide some common sense logic that when a platform holder purchases a developer, they don't tend to release their output on other platforms. I say trying because common sense seems to be sparse when it comes to people discussing Microsoft related news in good faith here.

Maybe he means people on tweeter or Facebook or something. I can’t think of a single person here who really gives a shit if these games come to PS5. We all know we get them day one on GamePass, who cares about anything else.

Well, as a PC gamer myself, I gotta say that what MS is doing here doesn't bother me one bit. Now, Spiderman character being locked to Playstation in a multiplatform game? yeah, that really pissed me off.

I am sure playstation fans are raging and bitching all over internet because of the possibility of not getting to play the amazing playstation ports of bethesda games.

Actually yes, that is the case.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Is there some easy way to get a idea of how much profits the company makes?
My first thought was I must have made a mistake or something, because it seems way to low.

Could be a case of me googleing the wrong thing? or misunderstanding the results or trusting a random googleing to provide easy to understand numbers.

MSFT pretty much makes six to seven times what they spent yearly. Also, this cash was already set aside: it's from the aborted takeover of TikTok... so a total of 25 billion ready for disbursement as allocated by MSFT.

I think it makes sense to deliver their games only through their ecosystem. Make your ecosystem support every one of their games is a clear priority over porting a game outside of their ecosystem. For bringing gaming to more people, the plan is to expand the ecosystem. They seems very open minded to put it even on Playstation and Nintendo Switch.
But it also makes sense for Sony to not want the MS ecosystem on Playstation.

So, if we do not have Bethesda games on PS5, i woldnt blame any of the companies.
