Yeah I don't understand how anybody could vote for OG Smash over Melee. That, and Goldeneye getting a spot in the top 100 gave me an aneurysm.

You shouldn't be getting an aneurysm over people sharing their opinions about which games they like. For many people, making a list of their 50 favorite ever means not only games that are "objectively" good, but more importantly games that have meant something to them or bring special memories. I don't think anyone's gonna debate that Melee is a better game than Smash 64, but people have different experiences and that's what they're gonna give value to.

Let me rephrase that. I don't understand how anybody could vote for OG Smash over Melee, and Goldeneye getting a spot in the top 100 gave me an aneurysm. Smash 64 is still a fun game IMO, just not the best in the series. Goldeneye on the other hand is dated.

Also, I'm only about half joking with the aneurysm bit. But oh well.

And yeah, people will list their favorite games based on what they got the most playtime with, or remember best. Or at least some people will. I was just trying to explain my theory as to why PC/Xbox games rarely make the list despite being games that broke a ton of ground when they came out.

Well, I think the bold is true.  But about half of the threads and replies are people hating on Nintendo.  It is true that people talk about Nintendo more, but it could be positive or negative.

You are right that there are always people who hate Nintendo in some of the Nintendo threads but most of the time it's only 1 or 2 posts that are about hating Nintendo and they usually get 20-30 replies. So it's not like half of the thread is about people hating on Nintendo it's more like half of the thread is the Nintendo community bashing together the 1-2 Nintendo hate posts.

And there are always people who hate in one community, there are also people who do the same thing in Playstation threads. But I guess since you mostly play on Nintendo you will not realize that and only perceive the Nintendo hate posts.

What makes you think I mostly play on Nintendo?  These are the platforms where my top 50 games came from.  They are actually all over the place, but my top console is the PS2.

Breakdown of platforms
(if its on 2 platforms I give it 1/2 a point)

Atari 2600 - 1
NES - 5.5
Genesis - 3.5
SNES - 3.5
PS1 - 3.5
PS2 - 6
Wii - 1
PS3 - 5.5
Wii U - 2
PS4 - 0.5
GBA - 3
Switch - 2
Arcade - 5
Mobile - 1
PC - 7

True. Whatever we do, we can't erase the Playstation/Nintendo-bias of this community anyways. Barely any Xbox, PC-gamers or Retro-gamers (besides Nintendo/Playstation retro), basically non-existant mobile or MMO-gamers. This diversity we don't get in any case.

True words but it should also be noted that the Nintendo bias is way bigger than the Playstation bias on this site.

Well, if you look at it, without the hate posts in the first place (or just negatively colored posts) you would've 20-30 replies in the thread less. Which often amounts to basically nothing. And as far as I can see, the PS-posts usually stay clear of Nintendo-fans answers completely. Which brings less posts in the end. So if you want PS-threads to flourish more on this site, than post negative replies in PS-threads so the threads stay active and are visible in the hot topics.

I have difficulties to quantify the Nintendo or PS-bias. Looking at the most active users, I don't think there is much advantage to one side or another. But whatever. That we basically only have two of potentially seven important gaming  fanbases sucks.

Fair point, sorry for my comment.

It would be wise for people not to use this thread for their "state of the fanbases on VGC" debate. Moreso than that, I think if people were dissatisfied with the results, they should probably participate in next year's event so their tastes can be better represented. The OP put a ton of time and effort into the event, I think it's only fair to at least treat those efforts with some courtesy and respect.

That said, thanks for putting in the effort @mzuZek, you did a great job!

If I'm being totally honest, getting the capital Z placement wrong bothers me more than the fanbases debate.

Sigh... I always mess that up..  -_-

First of all, really good job on the execution and presentation of the topic, @mZuzek
Was nice to see all the different breakdowns, and that each game in the top 100 was presented with a banner.

I was pleased to see Majora's Mask at #12, before I kept scrolling down, and realized that the entire Top 20 (except SOTC) was nothing but Nintendo games, and 4 other Zelda titles were above Majora, so I was like... oh... T_T

And I'm not sure how this relates to the fanbase of VGCZ vs people who participated, but since I like the effort put into this, I will make sure to try to participate next time.

The top 2 on PS4 being Persona 5 and Nier is pretty accurate to my personal taste though, but there are many big games I haven't played yet.
Suikoden II landed on #43 for PS1 with 1 vote. Since it's my favorite game of all time, I'll make sure it gets one more vote next time. lol

I just need another week or two of playing Smash. After that it's the Suikoden trilogy for me, followed by Wargroove!

I think the format is just fine as it is. It's really just a matter of getting more people to participate in my opinion, not even for the sake of variety, but just the get more people's opinions to influence the end result. I don't agree with the top of the list, but I don't mind that. These are all just opinions after all, and everyone is entitled to their own. I would just like to see more people taking part, and maybe just get more games in general on to the list.

Oh yeah, I seem to recall discussing Suikoden 2 with you about a year ago? Glad to hear you will get to it.
It's an old game now, so the gameplay mechanics show their age in some ways. Though it has some mechanics that are still rather unique and interesting to this day. But primarily, I hope you enjoy the story of Suiokoden 2, because it's something that stuck with me all this time. Just remember that each one has a 'true ending' where the requirement always is to recruit all 108 characters. (It can also depend on keeping certain characters alive, even where it seems as if they're supposed to die.)
When you finish it, if you feel like it I'd like to hear what you thought of it.

It has begun.
