Forums - Gaming - Playstation 4 seems to be on track to be the new PS2.

Hell to all the folks saying it will slow down like the wii did, how so?
The ps4 sold 20 million at $399, it will have better software and way better support than the wii. Not to mention FF, Metal Gear, next gen GTA, and GT7, price cut are still to come.
I think PS4 will breez by PS3 and PS1 plus give PS2 a run for its money. Sony console tend to get better as time goes on, the gen just began and it's already at 20 million.

The hype is about to die any minute now, don't get your hopes up buddy and may jesus be with you in this jesus day

True that. Even when it reaches 100M, it's all because of teh hype. Darn you hype! ~v~

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

The DS was the best chance of any console passing the PS2. Sure the PS4 will win this generation and probably by a large margin but i don't believe it will even come close to PS2 numbers when it's all said and done.

Thats the thing these aren't exactly perfect just yet.  A key demographic is really missing, and I don't think they will be here, and that is the casual audience. However I don't think the casual audience isn't as important to the overall health of PS4. I think PS4 could have the best attachment rate in the long run of any console past 30 million. Infact it might even rival ps2 in terms of million sellers. I just don't see it rivaling PS2 total sales. I think it will become more obvious in this year and next year that it might not. However like I said, it really doesn't have to.

The casual talk is bullshit.  Don't mean any ill will toward you but 'casual' means nothing to me.  Most of the people on this site, are casual.  Honestly how do you define such a demographic? Because if it's by the amount of grandmas and soccer moms attached to a platform, the Wii is the only console ever to have a sizeable 'casual' market which is an absolutely ridiculous metric to go by in my honest opinion.

No.  The PS4 has what the PS2 had - Popularity.  It has the ability to speak many languages. Something we saw the PS2 do. It has the software to cater to every niche.  Something PS2 did.  Another important factor is Japan is finally back on board after the noteable absence last gen on the HD twins. We're about to reach another high point in gaming.  Mentioning 'casuals' just doesn't make sense to me because 99% of gamers as a whole are casual lol.

Casual is typically core and vice versa.  Hardcore gamers are the kind that are looking at the top slots in leaderboards.  Hardcore gamers spend thousands on the l337 master race PC configuration. Hardcore gamers drink mountain dew, live off doritos and taco bell and probably have a few other traits that I don't care to mention because I could probably describe some people here to a tee :P lol.

Simply put ps2 did have a certain audience, that today would most likely buy tablet instead. I don't know if simply calling them grandmas is right. Yes Wii did have this audience as well. However we will see in the long run who is right. If PS4 beats PS2 or even remotely reaches 150million, I will gladly accept I am wrong.

Also Japan isn't back on, PS4 isn't even coming close to ps2 numbers in that market. Same with software support from Japan. A lot of key companies are focusing more and more on the mobile market.

I hardly think PS4 eclipsing PS2 sales would determine who's right. In fact a contradiction in your arguement is stating that Wii had the 'casual' demographic yet it didn't even outsell PS2 yet PS4 has to outsell it for me to be right :P How's that work? haha.

Again sorry if I came off standoffish.  I haven't seen your posts around this site that much but I'm rather annoyed at the community as a whole when people talk about 'casuals' because the way it's worded makes it sound like people think they're hardcore gamers and these casuals are a low level race of beings not worth a penny. Much in the same way actually that the PC 'master race' looks down on the 'console peasants'.  That shit pisses me off.

When someone says casual, I interpret it as mass market appeal.  In that regard all three consoles had pretty even mass market appeal.  This gen, PS4 is the most popular by a significant margin and I expect this figure to skew favorably as the gen matures.  I maintain that PS4 has a chance to come close PS2.  It has the content delivery platform to maintain a healthy life as a senior citizen when it's newborn is revealed supposed we see a wicked final price of $100-$150.

EDIT: And about Japan.  Dragon Quest has come back to consoles. Kingdom Hearts 3 is coming out. Final Fantasy XV is going to have an appeal we haven't seen in years.  Persona 5 will have unprecedented sales for itself.  Bloodborne is fucking huge and it's roots are in Japan.  The writings on the wall - We will see momtentum increase in Japan.

Um, don't worry about it, I typically argue for the sake arguing at times. However lets address the first thing, Wii didn't have the core gaming audience, casual isn't enough to win. It had Core Nintendo audience, but Core Nintendo Audience < Core Gaming Audience by a line side. Also I usually refer to two categories as well, casual and core. However Core isn't hardcore, and core is really broad. I think what you described as casual, is what I consider Core. It is really hard to simply define casual audience, but essentially they aren't spending much in this hobby money or time.

Edit: Also the trust me on Japan. It won't swing back sadly. It is mostly mobile land featuring 3DS. (However the rest of the world is making up for Japan, and that might be where it could get more sales than even I imagine).

There are four big things that probably won't make it possible for the PS4 to reach PS2 levels:

1. Not as much Japan support...but probably more this time around than the PS3.
2. Tougher competition from X1 promotions
3. No price advantage
4. And probably the most important reason: most games people want on the PS4 are on both systems. The PS2 had a shit load of exclusives that gamers wanted more than any of the games that appeared on all consoles. At that time I believe annual sports games were the only things that were really popular multiplatform sellers. GTA of course later ended up on Xbox, but the damage was long done and GTA didn't sell nearly as well on the Xbox as on the PS2.

Lube Me Up

I don't think it will pass the ps2. You write off the xbone too easily and while the ps4 will sell more, I believe the xbone will seriously stunt the potential sales in the USA.

"Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth." -My good friend Mark Aurelius

It's possible but because of different reasons than why the ps2 did so well. Project Morpheus and Playstation Vue have the potential to drive PS4 sales to PS2 levels or past it but we will have to wait to see on that. It really depends on further down this console gen.

I'm not loyal to any brand and niether should anyone else in my opinion. It's simple. Buy the console that best fits you and provides the best games  of your favorite genres. PS typically produces a variety of mature themed games, has a lot of JRPG's and has the most new IP's. That's why I primarily buy ps consoles. I'm not a big FPS fan or a fan of mario like games, so I have little to no reason to buy the other brand of consoles.
