Forums - Gaming - Playstation 4 seems to be on track to be the new PS2.

Nope. The PS2 had an expensive successor, which led to a good amount of PS2 sales even when the PS3 didn't take off as expected. In order to match PS2, PS4 needs to sell well even after PS5 launches, and if PS5 is at a good price, then there will not be a post-PS3 launch phenomenon PS2 had. Unless the PS5 is ridiculously expensive.

We thought the same thing about the Wii

The Wii was an Xbox 1 with motion controllers.. And ps4 unlike Wii has tech that is going to keep it going for the future.. Like the ps3 did before it.. What made ps3 eventually take Wii down was the fact it was an actual nexgen machine.. Capable of way more than the wii.. Ps4 is today the most powerful video game console ever released..

not even if it stays on the market for 10 years like the ps2.

Neither in sales nor in games. The PS2 had dozens upon dozens of exclusives over its competition. The PS4 does not currently, and it doesn't seem like it will be even close to the PS2 in that area by the end of this generation. I don't expect the PS4 to last anywhere nearly as long as the PS2 in order to match it in sales either. Primarily because it doesn't have the same multitude of exclusives that kept people to replenish their dying PS2's with new SKU's and it doesn't target the casual audience that the PS2 had targeted. Still the PS4 should be much more successful than the PS3, with 60-65% of market-share and with sales somewhere around 100k-110k. That isn't close to the PS2's 155mil with a market-share of about 78%, but still moderately better than the PS3.

It is definitly starting to look more and more possible. PS4 already has the games market dominated, and Sony has not even hit full throttle on in house develompent. I think by next year we should be back in the swing of basically a new big name exclusive every month. This should also be the time we start seeing 3rd parties pulling ahead on PS4 or completely dropping XBO/PC versions.

Beyond gaming Sony is doing an awesome job creating the best network of digital entertainment anywhere. PlayStation Vue, PlayStation Video, and PlayStation Music are laying a foundtion for the all digital future, and Sony is for the first time in years getting out ahead of everyone else. In time they will continue to grow this network out to other devices as well, to allow people to view their conent anywhere , and anytime.

Innovative new gaming tech like PlayStation Now, Project Morpheus, Remote Play, and Share Play will be massive players in the next couple of years. Project Mopheus has potential to create the Wii like buzz around PS4 and give it a second life that has even more momentum than we are seeing right now. PS Now will build even more brand awareness as it expands to 3rd party smartphones, TV's Blu-ray Players, and set top boxes. Remote Play in time will give anyone with a 4G connection direct access to their home where ever they are. Finally Share Play will turn PS4 into the #1 multiplayer console this generation, and will continue to push units the more exposure it recieves.

This is just what we already know Sony is working on. They just purchased Onlive, they announced a partenership with ooVoo at CES, and they have placed the PlayStation brand as the flagship buisness of the entire corperation. What will come from these the above is yet to be seen. With the full support of the corperation, and every branch of Sony, PlayStation is in the best position any Gaming first Smart Box has ever been in.

15 year lifespan, 75% marketshare and 155 million sold lifetime is quite simply out of the question. It won't even get in the ballpark territory of the PS2 in that regard. The PS2 was the culmination of the perfect conditions for a home console and was very likely as good as it will ever get, and by some margin at that.

At this point I do think PS4 could taper near PS2 sales. It's currently outpacing PS2 and its online functions as a platform will make it an enticing smart box in the long term.

What's more, look ahead in 10 years when X amount of developing countries have more readily available internet access; This will also contribute to legs. The key factor here is whether or not we will see an uber cheap SKU in the next 10 years for PS4 that will give it appeal to 3rd world countries where cost is the do or die factor.
I'm not surprised most people are saying no. But this is the closest to "perfect conditions" in the modern day as it gets, really.

And that's totally a 100% good thing for everyone?, even PC gamers?, I honestly don't know what to say to that though because it comes off as being happy that people are getting less games and getting support dropped from their platform of preference, that's honestly a really bad thing to wish upon other gamers let alone hope for.

OT: I don't think it will reach the same numbers PS2 had or last as long but it will definitely outdo the PS3 for sure, though I can't say having more marketshare than everyone else is a good thing, not for everyone anyway.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Thats the thing these aren't exactly perfect just yet.  A key demographic is really missing, and I don't think they will be here, and that is the casual audience. However I don't think the casual audience isn't as important to the overall health of PS4. I think PS4 could have the best attachment rate in the long run of any console past 30 million. Infact it might even rival ps2 in terms of million sellers. I just don't see it rivaling PS2 total sales. I think it will become more obvious in this year and next year that it might not. However like I said, it really doesn't have to.

It would be a great victory for Sony, but I am sure they would be contempt with the PS4 crossing the 100 million line or more. PS2 had immensive longevity; something I don't believe the PS2 will have l.
