Wow so with one year more on the market the wii U achieve to be only 1.5mill behind the Ps4, amazing

It's like the 100% same story as X-box 360 vs PS3 (offcourse there is no hope for 360 to ever reach PS3.. but still)

Ontopic: i said it many times on this side.. do not count Wii-U out just yet.. Like we saw in last gen.. things can turn around (all 3 had the momentum at some point)

And to the OP.. don't forget VR..  I think it will be what truly makes the WiiU go "wii"

The market for a Nintendo system without a new controller novelty that makes people go crazy is about 20 million.

That's just all you're going to get without third party support and out-of-stop (from the industry standard anyway) hardware.

All the Mario Karts, Marios, DKs, Zeldas, Smashs, etc. aren't changing that unfortunately.

It's a system I'm having fun with though. I wish the OS was faster and some of the games loaded faster (DKC in particular almost feels like an unfinished game in this regard by Nintendo standards). My main huge gripe with the Wii U is that the Virtual Console should be much better by now, we should have N64 games, and more many more SNES titles. That and the controller ... I think it's needlessly bulky and toy-like in aesthetics. The screen should be better quality too.

I think the companies openness to indies, and its doubling down on promoting their key brands (3rd party partnerships), especially in Japan (where they actually have a shot of at least winning the Home Console fight there, regardless of that tiny market share in the scheme of things), are keys to more success in future generations, not this one.

In two years time we'll see just how the market has changed in favor of independent publishers, and perhaps only then we'll see what Nintendo has been trying to accomplish throughout this generation. As a game console manufacturer, id be very hesitant to spend lots of money on ANYTHING right now.

Can't wait for them 6 Million copies of Watch Dogs to fly off the shelves, right VGChartz?

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Begining with the launch of Mario Kart 8, we could be about to see the begining of a Wii U turnaround.  PS4 and XBOne still have yet to show truly amazing exclusive software and many titles are seeing delays.  3rd party support is fantastic, of course, but Wii U could potentially offer a compelling alternative.  At E3 we could see:

-An amazing Zelda U title.

-The reveal of some game-changing new IP's along the lines of Wii Sports or Brain Age.

-Multiple 3rd party exclusives, perhaps titles such as Last Story 2 from Mistwalker.

-Expanded details on titles with high potential such as X, B2, Smash U, HW and others.

-Potential system re-designs or price cuts.

It is not completely out of the realm of possibility that we could see going forward over the next year and a half, Wii pushing forward with a mature Zelda, some unique new ways of playing games that capture the mass market, a sexy new look for the system, a $249 price and mutiple other core titles such as X, Last Story, Metroid and others.  It could rise to prominance and baffle those who said Nintendo needs 3rd parties and Wii U is underpowered.

Could it happen?  Will it?

I'm going to say no.

It's not simply an unappealing price and design, though that doesn't help. And it's not that the system lacks a game-changing new IP, though that doesn't help either. And it's not the lack of third-party exclusives, though that's probably the most damaging thing they can/will fix.

The problem is that Nintendo's business model simply does not work anymore. The dynamic they used to sell the Wii and DS does not exist today, and their products are not competing in the arena they now find themselves in. The market moved on, and they let themselves get left behind.

It seems like Wii U has been around for so long and doing poorly for even longer.  But in reality it's only been a very bumpy year and half since release and the competing systems have only been on the market for around 6 months.  As of today we have, in total sales:

PS4:  7.7 million

Wii U: 6.2 million

XBOne: 4.5 million

So, despite all the praise for PS4 and the doom for Wii U, the Nintendo system is only about 1.5 million units behind the market lead.  There are definitely issues for Wii U, in particular declining 3rd party support, but there is also potential.  The system has the "advantage" of being on the market for the longest, meaning Nintendo is streamlining costs and ramping up software production while addressing key short-comings.  Knowing that many 3rd parties are not fully behind the system means that Nintendo can react and partner with willing 3rd parties for joint productions.  Price cuts are now possible to move units into homes. Both DS and 3DS saw initial trepidation from the public before eventually becoming market leaders.  They lead the market despite poor 3rd party support and weaker hardware when compared to the PS line.

Highly Unlikely.

When the 360 had a year lead, PS3 spent nearly the entire generation catching up.

For the Wii U to be surpassed in 4 months is disatrous.

Games haven't mattered, Price Cuts haven't mattered, and 3rd party Wii U exclusives havent't mattered.

There is no reason to believe anything will change much unless something extraordinary happens.

Yeah well put.

The other issue is once the Mario Kart 8 bullet is used ... honestly Nintendo doesn't have a whole lot left for the rest of the gen in terms of huge sellers. There's Smash, but Mario Kart/Wii Fit/Wii Sports/New Super Mario Bros./3D Mario/Donkey Kong Country will all have been spent.

Things like Bayonetta 2, X, Hyrule Warriors, Yarn Yoshi, aren't going to do any more than Pikmin 3, DKC, or Wind Waker HD ... none of which boosted the Wii U hardware much at all.

Whereas PS4/XB1 ... they have a full five years of support ramping up this fall with things like Batman: Arkham, Destiny, and the first real next-gen sports games starting to trickle in this fall and console specific exclusives like Sunset Overdrive and Driveclub coming.

The Sega Dreamcast also had a record-breaking launch

Really? ARe we comparing PS4 with the DC now? Thats what it came to?

The PS4 and DC are the exact oposite when it comes to market penetration, and the financial sittuation, brand awareness and 3rd party support are in a totally different category altogether. I would have understood if you draw a paralel between the DC and Vita/WiiU, but the PS4 is poised to be a success story, every sign point to that, while looking at sega in 3 month time you could tell, that something is not right.

OT: Nintendo could make the WiiU sell better, unfortunatly it needs tons of work right now: redesign, heavy software hitts, new IPs, massive improvement in its online segment and a pricecut. It could be turned around, if anything the PS3 prooved that a trainwreck can do great numbers, but Im not certain that Nintendo will be able to achieve it. Never the less, a 30 million userbase LT could be reached if they playe their cards right.

Just to be clear, I highly doubt that this will happen.

Edit: looking at the current poll results, I wonder why the majority is voting likely and yes? Are they voting purely on a hypothetical basis, or are they actually expecting for things to turn around?

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

Yes of course they can turn it around. The absolute necessary first step is a price reduction. Then they need announce a good variety of games at E3. A metroid game, the zelda game and another 2D or 3D mario would go a long way (just announce Galaxy 3 and people will pay attention)

The Wii U's concept is extremely flawed. It's basically Nintendo's version of the PS360 - six years after the PS360 were released. Oh, I'm sorry - it has the Gamepad. Yeah, total game-changer.

Consumers spent 6-7 years waiting for the next generation. When Nintendo finally enters it, it's... pretty much the same thing people had for the last 6-7 years. What, do you think the Wii U isn't considered an 8th gen competitor to the PS4/One because of a grudge with Nintendo? Please.

It's like I said before, the system's fate is sealed. Even the cross-gen games have a hard time going to the Wii U, and they are coming to an end. Once we go full next-gen, it's over. Arkham Knight, Assassin's Creed Unity, EA Sports UFC, FFXV, KH3... you get the idea.

It was a large mistake.

Honestly MS I think made a mistake too not investing more into their chip. The shadow of the PS3/360 looms large over this generation, you have to give consumers a large upgrade to get them off the fence.

When the Wii U was conceptualized in 2009/2010, Nintendo probably not think that the iOS marketplace (remember iPad wasn't even released until spring 2010) would damage their standing with casual gamers so much either.
