Considering that nintendo expects to sell 3 million Wii U this year with Mario Kart and Smash Bros, I don't think so.

It's only a prediction from Nintendo.  We decide with are money if it will reach that goal are more.  It's going to do a lot more then 3 million.

Iwata clearly stated that they are taking a very conservative approach to their current predictions after getting burned twice from their previous predictions.  The projected numbers don't look good but they should be able to at least match or beat it when they announce their next quarterly results.

I am so annoyed by people saying this. Let's flash back to one year ago. Everyone said "The Wii U will make a huge comeback. Once Pikmin 3, 3D World, and W101 come out all of its problems will be solved." Now here we are. The Wii U's sales are just as bad. Every time a new Wii U game comes out everybody gets excited, but they are always disappointed. I'm rooting for the Wii U as much as you guys are. It's a great system with great games. But we have to be realistic, Wii U sales will never get significantly better.

Indeed, the PS4 is only 1.5 million ahead. It's also only been on sale for a 3rd of the time :p

I unfortunately don't think that MK8 will boost Wii U sales by as much as people are hoping. A sad truth is that a lot of people who want to play MK8 already have a Wii U. I hope I am wrong but if I recall correctly the last Mario game failed to even outsell Knack or increase Wii U sales significantly.

Honestly, the Wii U needs a big AAA single player killer app bad. SM3DW, MK8, and Smash are great, but if you're a gamer who enjoys single player games, there's nothing but promises on the Wii U, and X won't move numbers like Nintendo bigger franchises.

The if no huge Wii U game is announced for release this year, the Wii U will have been out for two years with absolutely none of the must have, buy a console for it, single player games Nintendo is known for. No Mario. No Zelda. No Metroid. No Starfox. No Pokemon. No anything.

If it wasn't for Nintendo remaking my favorite game of all time in HD, I wouldn't have a Wii U right now and as absolutely awesome as MK is, it's something I'd wait to get. I didn't get a 3DS until Pokemon was announced, and the only reason I got one early was because of the limited edition Pikachu console. I feel like, for a lot of people, the Wii U faces a similar issue. If it wasn't for WWHD, I wouldn't even consider buying a Wii U until there was a very solid release date for either Zelda, Metroid, Starfox, Pokemon, or Mario. Probably X as well. See how wide my list varies?

Yet we're over a year in a half into the console's life cycle and not one of these basic requirements have been met. All there are is Pikmin, which is extremely niche, DKCTF, which has no console pushing power and should have been a 3DS game, and maybe W101, which is both a new IP and niche.

For me, MK and Smash are games you get after you get a console. I'm sure there are a ton of other people just like me.

By this time in the Wii's life, it had The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Pokemon Battle Revolution, Mario Kart Wii, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

And people wonder why the thing doesn't fucking sell.

Twice?  Iwata/Nintendo have missed every initial hardware forecast for the past five fiscal years.  It is about time they start living in the real world, though their 3DS forecast still seems optimistic considering its current state.

Do you mean their next yearly results?  Because their next quarterly results probably won't be great unless they manage to convince retailers to take hundreds of thousands of MK bundles.

I do think MK8 will spur sales, and depending on what other actions Nintendo takes sales could increase significantly.  A price-drop and/or mild redesign, an intersting new IP, a mature Zelda and Smash could combine to turn around fortunes in a hurry.  Will they all happen... not sure, but they remain a possibility.
