I think the companies openness to indies, and its doubling down on promoting their key brands (3rd party partnerships), especially in Japan (where they actually have a shot of at least winning the Home Console fight there, regardless of that tiny market share in the scheme of things), are keys to more success in future generations, not this one.
In two years time we'll see just how the market has changed in favor of independent publishers, and perhaps only then we'll see what Nintendo has been trying to accomplish throughout this generation. As a game console manufacturer, id be very hesitant to spend lots of money on ANYTHING right now.
Can't wait for them 6 Million copies of Watch Dogs to fly off the shelves, right VGChartz?
“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
