Forums - Sales - This generation hasn't even started yet

Until the current hardware situation changes, the only console I see attracting a significant number of "casual" gamers is Microsoft. That's not to say it will any time soon, but their much greater focus on multi-media and the bundled-in Kinect have the most potential to reel that market in.

As it stands, Sony would probably need to make significant changes to the PS4 to appeal to that market in any real way, likely on the hardware side.

Nintendo, I don't see having a realistic opportunity to pull something like that off with the Wii U.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

Good points and thanks for the hard work OP. I really agree with what you are saying. Even-though it makes a number of people here flushed and angry.

What has surprised me about the Xbox One release, is there aren't a bunch of great casual games. Yes, you have Xbox Fitness - which I have them yet to see really market and Just Dance. But they are still missing a great Kinect Adventures, a DisneyWorld Kinect game, Happy Action Theatre/Kinect Party, Kinectimals, type games to get the whole family and kids involved. Games that are easy fun experiences for everyone - something the Wii did really well, as did Kinect on the 360.

This first year seems mainly just about the 'hard core' gamers. Even when 'Kinect Fun Labs' launched at E3 2011, it gave early adopters some new creative experiences for the Kinect. One of the games 'I am Super' is still a requested favorite with kids. It's just a fun game/experience.

With the power with the new Kinect and X1, it seems to me they are going to have some big splashes of causal games coming out soon. Or they are just missing out on a big opportunity. I think we might get a tiny sampling at April's Build conference (rumored Cortana/Bing info). And I expect some 'Kinect-Kinect' at E3 this year.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

If PS4 ends up with 100m and Xbox end with 80m then it won't have played out all that differently to this gen. For PS4 to reach 120m then Xbox would have to stall at 60m which I can't see happening. This is why I keep coming back to my point of breaking out and finding new audiences - it is a much easier way to make money. I'd say that 15m of the 360s 80m or so came this way (via Kinect) so if they can do that more aggressively this generation then it gives them another angle to grow and compete, outside of the fight for the 150m core purchases.

What makes you think X1 will sale anywhere near as well as PS4 ? or even anyhwere near what 360 did.

Just about every reason 360 sold well does not apply to MS console this gen.

It sold well on the back of Sonys massive screw ups, they had every advantage yet only managed to match Sony at the end of it.  Now they are in a sales battle with Sony and its best and its been MS the one that was screwing up.  They lack every advantage they had last gen.

Xbox has none of the advantages it had that were fundemental to 360 success.

Early launch, sales build up
Price advantage
3rd party support quality
Easy of development over PS
Early software advantage
Online superior, Sony caught up

You think kinetic will make up for all that ? or its overblowed hyperbole tv features.

Awesome rebuttl to legit points.

Yes we will, and they are already playing out just not in a way you think or wish they should.

Like always, it`s too soon to determine how the generation will play out; like always, people are too quick to make conclusions despite history showing that anything can happen.

So far, the new consoles have a lot of hype behind them, but in terms of offerings, are they really above and beyond what PS3 and Xb360 offered? In my opinion, no.
That disparity between what the systems can offer and their perceived value will eventually be seen in sales.
The only thing that might put them on the same levels of last generation - assuming they last that long - is the actual games. If games really are a generation apart from the last one, then, consoles sales might go the way of last gen. If not, i don`t see them going that far, even not being able to attract more casual gamers with a new COD kind of game.

Wii U is the most complicated issue at hand.
It started bad, really bad and is now paying it`s mistakes. But that won`t last forever.
If 2014 really does bring a steady flux of games and Nintendo manages to turn things around in terms of brand perception and what the gamepad has to offer, Wii U might actually see a revival.

I disagree (respectively though since it's a thread made by the site owner).

I perdict 30 million Wii U
65 million Xbone
120 million PS4

Everything could end up being the winner, but after the first waves of hardcores and early adopters run out, the favourites are clearly Ouya and PSV!

Sorry but I dont see how the argument 'its a marathon, not a sprint' favours anyone more than it does Sony.
MS and nintendo are not known for long-term support and sony have the most poweful hardware and most first party developers to make sure they do last the longest.

Unless that prediction where sony go bankrupt comes true, I cant see the wii U or xbox one being supported longer or selling more than the PS4.

Im also not convinced by the casual games explanation, those games will be on the PS4 as well and in most cases a better version.
MS simply cant afford to buy out the influential ones.

Then you have to consider what happens with dead rising and titanfall. what if they go through the whole mass effect thing again?
