the boffins at these gaming headquarters better get working then for that big hitting experience, the phone/tablet market is so massively popular now it is hard to see them noticing our consoles,i think the "media box" is the best effort to get into every lounge off the bat, microsoft are in a good position and maybe they can get a kinect experience that has the wow factor for the casuals, price and games will be as important as ever

ms & sony are basically subscriptions now too aren't they,i know everything is media/phone/internet wise but you have to be dedicated to give a monthly to console companies unless they start tying it in with other services

I personally just don't get the appeal of playing casual games on a little smartphone screen. I can see it with the tablet, but touch screen controls just flat out suck in my opinion. I've tried them and that's one of the main reasons I won't even attempt to play any game on my I-phone anymore. I think there that bad. I think there's regular third party controls for those devices, but why not just buy a dam gaming console for my T.V.,instead of going through all that trouble, with casual puzzle games?

it all depends on what games and features they come up with/price drops etc, etc. anything is possible. ps3 turned it around and made up alot of ground, from were it first started. Nintendo and MS can do the samething.

$600

I dont see how WiiUhas the same issue, MS cut will help but its not happening any time soon.

Honeslty they will piss of alot of people, if they cut after 6 months and i dont get some free shit to make it up to me i will ditch the Xbone!

The way I see it is you have 3 distinct groups of people who bought a last gen console.

The core gamer - Zelda, Uncharted, Gears, Mass Effect, Smash Bros. God of War, Forza.

The casual gamer - COD, GTA, Fifa, Madden, Need for Speed.

The casual "consumer" - Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Kinect.

I believe the problem for both Nintendo & Microsoft is the last category of people who have either moved on to tablets and mobile gaming or are happy with their current Wii, 360 Kinect and see no reason for an upgrade.

Hell, my 73 year old father has a Wii, my 33 year sister who has no interest in gaming also. They have both been collecting dust for the past few years. The casual consumers have moved on and aren't coming back.

I think Sony, Nintendo & Microsoft will all do well with their respective core gamer audience.

Sony and to a lesser extent Nintendo will do well with the casual gamer, which leaves Microsoft in a dangerous position since they invested so heavily in another "gimmick" to attract the casual consumer who I honestly believe has no interest in dumping $500 to change the TV channel with their voice.

Tv in could actually be a big deal for casuals.  I know my 70 year father likes the sound of just being able to talk to his tv instead of using a remote.  If microsoft can get the price down, I can easily see microsoft being able to market to that casual crowd.  I still think the ps4 will lead globally, but I think microsoft will retain majority here in the US.

If your father is just interested in talking to the tv, wouldn't he be far more likely to get the comcast x1 or another cable box that does that? The X1 is only $50-$100 if you already have cable. It doesn't sound like he's interested in gaming, so even at $400 Microsoft would have a really hard time selling to this crowd.

You are right somwhat, but still missing the point.  The point is that it is a selling feature that appeals to non gamers or casual gamers.  Im sure if i showed him a fishing game or a card game on the x1 he would like that as well.  Consumers may be able to get a device that does something similar for cheaper, but the point of the x1 is combine everything into one device.

The point of the XBONE doesn't matter. A non gamer is not going to spend $500 for TV voice features when a $50 device can do the same thing better. A casual gamer would probably prefer the XBONE since it is an all in one device with gaming and TV, but you certainly didn't describe your father as one of those. Talking to the TV is a selling feature, but only against the PS4.

Yep not to mention using voice gets old and monotonous really quick....Hardly a selling feature. MS is in a spot of trying to sell something people simply don't need or want.

Lets not forget, PS4 will be just as capable with their own TV sercice, game streaming, etc....... It's not like the x1 is doing anything new or that people can already do better elsewhere.

I'm not disagreeing with you.

But I think PS4 will be first this entry generation... a lot of "low" sales from PS3 was because the late release compared with your main competitor 360... Nintendo with Wii make your own race and the battle was between PS3 and 360.

If PS3 was launched together with 360 I'm sure the same that are happening with PS4 now could happen with PS3.... the PS3 could never stay behind 360 in sales and the sales of 360 could never reach what they accomplished last gen.

This generation will show how from start to end one console in the top stop.

Hate to burst your bubble but the Wii U was the top stop at the start of this generation.  We can however agree that it won't be there long.

Just look at threads from 2007 or so. They are funny as hell!

So yes, I agree, we don't know nothing yet. But it sure looks good for dat PS4.

I can see Nintendo focus solely on a Nintendo Tablet in the future with connectivity options with television ( so basicly removing wii u console but keeping the controller )

Yeah. I said their biggest mistake was to assume those previous mega-hits will still work today but their second biggest is with their hardware. Most people have no interest in the 3D element of the 3DS (the 2DS is what the platform should always have been IMO) and with Wii U they know they need to do something to compete with tablets but don't really know what? Once they get it right and get the right software for Wii U (or some kind of successor / spinoff) and release some hardware-selling software then they may see some success again.

With both 3DS and Wii U, Nintendo released a new hardware element (3D and tablet) like they had the gen before (dua +l touch screen and motion control) but no software to show it off and make it a must-have. Until they can figure out the point of the Wii U tablet controller then nobody is going to buy it - simple as that! If they can, and convince the casual public why they need it like they did with motion controls - then they could turn things around enormously but at the moment that is looking unlikely...

They need the same approach as last gen but something that is innovative and new today instead of just recycling what was new 6-7 years ago.

I think it comes down to the simple fact that Nintendo got lucky with the Wii mote and Wii sports , then they believed that it's succes was simply down to Nintendo's innovation rather than as is often  the case when a new product becomes an unexpected success , it simply was the right thing at the right time and captured the publics attention.

Quite often the people behind these type of succes stories believe they where firmly in control of those events and  believe that their new audience is there because of  them , or in Nintendo's case , Nintendo rather than the Wii itself , so instead of catering for and trying to keep this new audience going forward , they go looking for the next big thing and for them that's doubly hard since their success was built on not just the hardware  , but compelling software so we get 3D and the pad and things go back to pre Wii levels.
