Games not changing in price despite production costs going up over the years immediately kills this argument for me. DLC is a necessary evil to keep the profits flowing and the base price low for a lot of these companies/studios.

So... you basically say I should fund mismanagement then?

I fail to see where you get that from my statement at all.

You say the increased production costs are the reason I should pay more. Directly (price) or indirectly (DLC).

Not including RPGs since they are always have been and will be (for the most part) long games. But especially 2D games I always found to be rather short games on average, maybe averaging out around 6 hours? Definitely short enough to clear on my first day of playing. Arcade games are usually only 1-2 hours max. DLC has gone too far in many instances but older gamers, especially carts, were quite expensive. I think I sort of get your point but I don't think your analogy was too great.

Where are good to great games with small budget. Many japanese studios make great games without the need for this stuff and survive on small quantities sold.

I used to buy Mega Drive games for over 100 dollareedoos, so i'll never understand modern pricing complaints.

Exactly what I was going to say. I remember paying $50 for World Games on the NES. People would scoff at paying $5 for it as a downloadable title today.

Which is why we should boycott DLC! I haven't gotten DLC since Modern Warfare 3 lol.

Indie devs are already doing this and not charging $60.00 per game.  However, when you hit the $60/AAA area, you find generally that there are sacrifices made to better convey the studios vision.  Look at The Order.  It is getting hammered in reviews for sacrificing key elements for graphics.  Other games like Xenoblade, even though they are praised for being what they are, get dinged for character models and faces.  It's just the current reality games are faced with.  You can't have the complete perfect package at the $60.00 price point any more.  Those that somehow get there are the exception, not the rule.

So what it comes down to at the end of the day is making informed purchases and knowing what you are getting into.  I made the foolish mistake of buying the Watch Dogs season pass.  Now, I don't buy season passes.  I also don't do a ton of day 1 buys anymore.  The industry has some growing pains to go through with DLC and price points.  Once it gets past those, there will be a new element in play.  It's the nature of progressive business.

It's silly to compare them. For example I played Skyrim for over 100 hours on PS3 and got the platinum. And I still spent almost five times as much time on Titanfall. I'm already at 40 hours or so with Evolve, more than I got out of GTA V, and probably right at what I have spent with Last of Us.

Games like Evolve and Titanfall are the complete package. It just might not be a package that appeals to you :)

yeah and I could play through the Order 500 times like you play a MP map 500 times so I guess any amount of content is good.

See the problem isn't just purely length for games this generation is it. I think the 2nd factor which is a more important one, is gameplay. You can talk about games being short in the past, but they had masterful gameplay which caused huge replayability and enjoyment out of beating a game.

And if you have basic gameplay of an FPS/TPS/RPG/etc and it being short experience, ya obviously it won't be worth 60 bucks, not when you have games $10 dollars that absolutely get the 2nd factor right and just as long as these short games are.
