Forums - Sales - Nintendo Quarterly Sales Report to 30th June: Switch 2 ships 23.68m (Outships Gamecube)

Yeah on Switch 1, its native software was all you could buy on it, it wasn't like it played Wii U discs or 3DS carts.

Switch 2 software by contrast has to compete with the thousands-strong library of backwards compatible Switch 1 titles.

That'll be a factor yeah though first party software is way more important to Nintendo platforms than Playstation and the last first party Switch 1 game might've already released. Basically what I'm getting at is I don't think there will still be a significant userbase left 5 years into the Switch 2's life like how the PS4 still has 20 something million people using it every month.

I actually think there's a good chance that a lot of the Switch 1 audience will remain active for years to come; many will of course upgrade, but for a lot of the expanded audience who play cosy games, indies, or just those wedded to a particular forever game like Tomodachi Life or Stardew Valley or what have you, the system is still a viable platform and will remain so long after major software moves on.

It has a very large base and that won't dry up over night, especially when economic factors are leading people to stick with their old consoles for longer and longer in general.

I don't think it'll dry up over night or anything like that, I just expect it to decline faster than the PS4's user base has. Though since this will get a definitive answer eventually I guess we can just agree to disagree and see what happens.

It's the same with Xbox and Playstation where you didn't need to just purchase PS5 or Xbox Series games you could go back to the PS4 and Xbox/Xbox 360/Xbox One and play those games. I got my Switch 2 on launch and I bought 17 games on it, and during that time I also bought like 10 Switch games.

People seem to forget when a system is backwards compatible you have access to older games. The Switch still sells software like crazy and if it wasn't backwards compatible with Switch 2 then I think it's software sales wouldn't be this high.

(Nvm, Shadowlink's post contained an error)

One crazy fact is that according to Shadowlink's numbers, BOTW was the second highest selling Switch 1 game this quarter, above even Animal Crossing and Smash Ultimate.
The Switch 2 version would have helped with that of course, but still, insane numbers for a game approaching a decade old.

Wait, how? MK8DX and TL:LtD easily cleared it, and IIRC Mario Odyssey outperformed it 2:1… unless I’m misunderstanding?

I did miss Tomodachi yeah, but Shadowlink's chart has BOTW selling 420k (heh) to 300k for Odyssey:

I see. Yea those numbers aren’t right, I don’t believe. BotW did 220k. Still very impressive, especially with TotK gnashing into its legs.

Yeah after checking last quarter's report he made a mistake; BOTW was 33.84m in March, not 33.64m.

Still, 220k 9+ years later is nothing to sniff at, Mario being ahead makes sense though given the Galaxy movie presumably bringing him some attention.

Really? Soo 1.5bill physical/digital on what? What are the total softwarw sales then?

The 1.56195 Billion software that Nintendo reports only counts software with a physical version, IIRC. (Open to correction here)

So if one were to include the multitude of digital-only games, it could potentially be much higher.

Not sure where you got that info but thats seems not the case.

The total software that ninty mentioned(1.5bill+)

Is with digital only games included.

  • Grand Totals: The overall lifetime software unit numbers provided in Nintendo Financial Results combine physical cartridge sales and digital downloads across first-party and third-party publishers.
  • Digital & Indie Inclusion: Download-only releases (such as indie titles that never received a physical print) are fully factored into the platform's total consolidated software sales units.

Again, that 1.5bill is insane but you cant compare it to a console that was physical only/did not recieve 1dollar/10 dollars heck not even 20 dollar games.
