i always find it funny when people jump to conclusions like this. i feel like people have been saying the same about gamestop for the past, well.. 10+ years. that they are dying because of the move to digital. well not really. they are dying because their pricing stinks, their stores are unappealing, the stores are filled with junk, and the employees are overbearing and make the experience miserable. there always has and will be a place for physical games in the marketplace. sure, gamestop wont be as booming as it was in the 7th generation, but that doesnt mean it still cant be profitable. people will blame the rising popularity of digital purchases, but i think if gamestop got to really know and understand their customer base, theyd be much more successful.

There's a store chain called VideoGamesEtc. They operate like the Gamestop of old and are doing very well.

But if they leaned into the physical market, basically all those games would essentially become xbox exclusives. Enough bad press and sony could backtrack. Weve seen companies do this before. all of this being said, optical media has not ever been a good option for gaming ever in any reason exept for price. we only were able to run games purely on disc for around a decade to 15 years really, and even at its height it came with multiple compromises.
if xbox really wanted to keep physical going foward, they'd need to use carts/cards, same with sony. it will break physical backcompact, but its really the only way imo.
