It’s incredibly difficult to stay consistently great over a long period of time. I think we have a tendency to place our faith in the name of a studio, even if it’s clear the talent has gone elsewhere, or the industry has simply passed it by.
Both Nintendo and Capcom have, somehow, endured for 40-plus years. It’s really miraculous. Nihon Falcom is still rocking it. From Software has only gotten better from its early days. Same for Supergiant. Atlus remains one of the studios I trust the most.
I think the biggest, saddest examples of decline are Bungie and Rare. Bungie was arguably the best developer on the planet from 2001 to 2010; now it’s just a name. Rare kept pace with Nintendo and Square from 1994-2000 — in some instances even outdoing them — but started to fall apart in the 21st century. It’s still active but hasn’t made a great game since 2008.
