Forums - Nintendo - Starfox, a reimagining of Starfox 64, out now on Switch 2

Edit: Did anyone else do an easy / bad play through in purpose to start with? Or did you all just go in chasing those high scores? I just realized how many alternate routes this game has, as I want to unlock every cut-scene. And man, that's gonna be at least five play-throughs!

Yeah I did the same thing; I've done the bottom/easy and middle/medium route, gonna do the top/hard route next.

In your Google Search bar type in "do a barrel roll", then press enter

It puts a smile on your face

Alrighty, have now played every route and level.

Fantastic title; it's every bit as fun now as it was in 90s, but now it's enhanced with the best visuals seen in a Nintendo game to date, a terrific re-orchestrated soundtrack, and excellent new cutscenes.

Definitely a game I can see myself returning to over and over again over the next few years, whenever I need a palette cleanser.

So, I have played every level at least once now and I gotta say... the game is fantastic! I almost forgot what an absolute masterpiece Star Fox 64 is. I sometimes skip over it in my mind and instead remember games like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Mario 64. But Star Fox 64 is just as great, it's an absolute timeless classic and this game proves it.

I love the new cut-scenes, as they give the routes more depth. I like that you can skip more cut-scenes than you could in the original if you want a quick play-through. The graphics are amazing, the music is top notch... god, did Star Fox 64 have great music.

Some iconic lines have been changed, but other cool lines have been added. (slight spoilers:) Slippy's "that's why you don't rush a system's check" in Corneria is awesome. Peppy's reply to the submarine being able to barrel roll ("it can do that?!" in an excited voice) is hilarious. And Katt's character has definitely improved compared to the original. Falco's friendly fire response "keep that up and see what happens" is also really cool, lol.

Also, I love the holo viewer as it gives you additional lore and the expert mode challenges are awesome! They are actually really hard and challenge you to do some insane stuff.

Shout-out to the ending cutscene, btw: It changes depending on the route you have taken, which is a cool addition and adds replay value.

Will certainly play more this weekend. Almost got every medal on normal difficulty, only missing Aquas (my muscle memory just kept throwing me off with the homing + firing torpedoes).

This is a game I know I will come back to again and again. Please, Nintendo! Give us a full-fledged "Star Fox 2: The Lylat Wars" or something and add even more characters (Krystal, please?) and lore. Nintendo thinks in IP these days an Star Fox has the potential to be a very valuable IP for them.

Yeah this is right up there with the likes of Metroid Prime Remastered in my view as one of the gold standard examples of how to modernise an old game.

A+ effort all around, if they can follow up with a successor that's equally as good, I'll be over the moon.

It’s great! Bought it day one, and have no regret.

I like the art style, even though I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I like how they went for the 90s plushies look from the OG game’s cover/booklet.

My only nitpick is they were way too conservative and didn’t add much (if at all) to the OG’s gameplay and stages. I wish they had expanded the campaign and made new levels, new secret routes, new gameplay elements…

But I agree with you, as a pretty 1 to 1 remake of the original with improved QoL, it is comparable to Metroid Prime Remastered.

Here’s hoping they’ll shake things up a bit more with their OoT remake.

Just unlocked the expert level. Never knew it existed with starfox64

Besides the voices of Rob and the bosses, it's awesome. Replayvalue is still a big 10.

I do actually dislike the level design in Venom 2 when fighting against Starwolf. Getting the gold medal seemed to be a bit random, with Peppi and Slippy dying in the first (half?) minute a lot of the times. But I got it

It definitely sets a new visual standard for first party games on Switch 2 as well; huge step up from any prior Nintendo game on the platform, all of which felt like Switch 1 games on steroids.

Glad people are acknowledging this. Graphics aren't everything but its shame we couldn't get a fresh slate of ground up Switch 2 games based on the technology that wowed and said "Next Gen". It felt like something that was easily in their grasp, particularly with the gulf in specs and tech available. I just hope we get to point where Nintendo fully embraces DLSS too because the game apparently doesn't use it for any actual gameplay (only cutscenes)

Yeah while I did enjoy games like Mario Kart World, DK Bananza, Kirby Air Riders and Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment, I think it's safe to say Nintendo's output has so far been visually underwhelming given what the hardware is capable of; Starfox is the first real first party showcase and it's arriving over a year into the console's life.

Hopefully things accelerate from here with the likes of the Ocarina remake and whatever else Nintendo's studios are cooking up for 2027.
