Forums - Gaming - Social Experiment: Does this gameplay footage look smooth to your eyes?

How would you describe the smoothness of the footage?

Buttery Smooth, no complaints 6 33.33%

Low frame rate but consistent 6 33.33%

High Framerate but inconsistent 1 5.56%

Not Smooth/Choppy Framerate 2 11.11%

Somewhat Smooth, could be improved. 3 16.67%

Total:18

Hard to say. High fps improves controls (the biggest get) and videos lack that feedback. Also fps helps with smoothness, not so much the screen coming towards the player, but when panning. The video has basically no panning, and the third problem is it has a lot of motion blur.

I went with low but consistent, but don't think it is a good test, because it lacks panning.

Anybody who has 120 hz, go to the link above. Set the 3 lines to 30, 60 and 120 fps.. tell me there isn't a massive and blatant difference.

So I posted this because I'm trying to see how much of difference in reaction there is to 30fps and it's appearance when it's:

1: Not labeled 30fps

2: Not contrasted against 60fps in a toggle or comparison.

In my experience perception of frame rate is very plastic and bendable. I was surprised just by how smooth this looked to my eyes. The context is I'm on YouTube and just scrolling through other 30fps content.

It’s definitely a bit harder for me to perceive 30fps v 60fps when watching videos versus playing games for me— the biggest reason being that 30fps triggers fight-or-flight when playing video games (not-so-fun fact! I’ve got a sensory disorder that makes for this to be possible), whereas videos do not do this.

That said: I could still tell FPS wasn’t quite at the levels I was used to for FH… though had you asked if I thought it was 30fps or 60fps, after some thought I prolly would’ve landed on 30.

I noticed none of the comments mentioned the fps either, or complain it was the quality mode, which is something I tend to see when 30fps is clearly stated.

A few things like excellent motion blur also help smoothness. FFVII Rebirth had no camera blur and I found it looked comparatively choppy changing camera angles.

This then takes things to a broader topic of genre, how much camera panning is involved in the gameplay? The more there is sudden camera shifts under the input of the player, the more frame rate can frustrate

I still haven't voted, but earlier I actually wrote a post that was touching the framerate subject as well, as well as YouTube quality. It was a fairly positive assessment of the situation, considering the limitations, but I wasn't really happy with the post overall, especially because of the limitations that might make it harder to do the game justice, so I scrapped the post.

One interesting thing about the video is that things are really smooth where it matters, but if you look at the sides, the motion looks kind of uncanny.

I wouldn't call this a problem, the intention is to holistically say how the footage looks, not necessarily let numbers or comparison dictate your experience. For sure though, with games with lots of constant panning, I can see why some hate motion blur. I think it helps sell action and velocity in racing games and like it pretty much everything as long as you can dial it down to your pref

I think we are aligned.  Fps is very game specific.  Like Prime 4, 120 fps is crazy better when panning, not moving forward.  Meanwhile, 120 fps for Luigi or Cpt Toad, meh.

If you told me it was 30fps, I'd believe you.

nice looking game though

Yeah, but would you have an instinctive thoughts about its performance from the video? Or is that something that wouldn't really pass your mind?

Honestly, I don't think performance is anything that factored into my watching of the video. Unless it seems rather obvious that there are performance issues, the gameplay looks smooth enough, but not 60fps smooth.

I don't play racing games so I can't really say

Is there any example with action games?

I feel if it doesn't register then probably it feels smooth/natural to your eyes, even if racing is not normally your genre. I don't want people to over analyse it, really I was just trying to see whether the actual 30fps cap of the footage is "visually" a low quality experience for people.

Here's an action adventure alternative though

This is a good example. I've played Horizon FW on both 30 FPS and 60 FPS, and I can say it doesn't look smooth at all in 30 FPS. I ended choosing the performance mode instead of the quality

That's fair. And you felt the 30 was unsmooth you toggled the 60fps mode option?

Also does the way you perceive the 30 here on youtube, reflect the way you felt about the smoothness when you played it in real life?
