I actually doubt it. The Pokemon series was already slow to adopt new platforms. I remember Black&White2 coming out for DS even though 3DS already was on the market. The customers of the series are trained to not look for the most technically advanced gaming, as is evident by the lack of visual wow, even compared to other Switch titles. I think most Pokemon players will be completely content with the Switch version.

Well we're just talking about possibilities here, but also we can't underestimate the fact that Nintendo and Pokemon will likely push ZA with the Switch 2 as the lead version in advertisement anyway so people will likely ask for it first.

Possible. But there is a price difference for folks that historically aren't too much invested into graphics. And also they would need to buy a new device. While the Switch version for lower price working with the device they already own is readily available. I don't know how much the pull from the advertisement is here. And from the direct I didn't got the impression that much changed besides frame rate and resolution for Pokemon. Kirby got new content, Mario Party new modes. Maybe there is more that they show in a dedicated Pokemon Direct. That may change this impression. So far I see not much reason to pay extra for the Switch 2 edition of Pokemon.

Looking back at Nintendo's 2017 line-up all the new games released for Switch in it's launch year were announced in the switch direct they did in January 2017. BoTW, Arms, Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, MK8DX. Except fe warriors which  was announced the week after. But still all of its games were announced long before the system released.

The exception is Pokken Tournament DX which was announced in June 2017, a remaster.

Their E3 2017 presentation revealed games for 2018 and beyond like Kirby, Yoshi, Pokémon and Prime 4 (lol).

I don't know why people are expecting additional big announcements for 2025 games when Switch 1 didn't get that and launched earlier in the year.

We may get something but certainly nothing on the scale of a 3D Mario.

We don't know who is developing DK yet, so if it's not the 3D Mario team, I can still see 3D Mario coming out in October/November (maybe do ZA for October and 3D Mario in November, which would be a nice 2013 callback....especially if GTA VI is still on track for 2025 lol).

It's been so long since the last 3D Mario game, so even if DK is made by them, I could still see 3D Mario coming for the holidays (if DK was a holiday title, I'd say that 3D Mario wouldn't happen this year). We did get Pikmin 3 & Mario Wonder in the same year, and I'm pretty sure there was overlap with the team. 8 years after Odyssey, and all they'd have is Balloon World, Bowser's Fury (which had assistance from other studios) & DK?

It's entirely possible that they weren't even working on DK anyways. When Peach Showtime was announced, people thought the 3D Mario team did it, but it turns out that it was Good-Feel.

Either way, I do think at least 1 more big Switch 2 exclusive will be announced before the end of the year for release during the holidays. They'd also announce at least one or two 2026 titles. Could see a Direct happening in July or August (and then another Pokemon Presents in August like recent years besides 2024). 3D Mario (or Mario in general) could get a dedicated Direct in September for the 40th anniversary).

Prime 4 could be Aug/Sep, ZA in Oct, 3D Mario in Nov with Air Riders & HW supplementing the first holiday. We'd then be back to our usual Feb-Jun-Sep Directs in 2026.

I don’t remember there being heavy speculation that Peach was developed by the 3D Mario team, I recall thinking it was Good-Feel from the beginning. Even if there was speculation, the difference is that it has been rumored for 3-4 years that the 3D Mario team was working on a new DK and now we have a new DK that looks like a 3D Mario game. It’s not a coincidence.

Yeah it’s possible that the 3D Mario team can work on two separate games concurrently but not at the same stage of development, they wouldn’t have a big 3D DK & big 3D Mario a few months apart. I could maybe see 3D Mario as a holiday 2026 title.

Maybe the next generation of Pokemon will be in late 2025?

@Mnementh @Mar1217 I also think the NS1 version will have the bulk of ZA's sales, just because the install base will be significantly higher there. Maybe the NS2 version will leg it out (I believe PS5 versions of games were more popular than their PS4 versions, for example), but the NS1 version should have a huge advantage. If anything, a NS2 version could at least prevent ZA from being the lowest selling core series Pokemon game of the Switch era so far.

@Zippy6 We also got Mario + Rabbids confirmed at E3 for an August 2017 release (it was heavily rumored in the months prior though). Worth pointing out that could be an exception since it is a third party, but I feel like Nintendo is more likely to keep things closer to their chest this time around. I'd imagine they don't want any more Prime 4 situations. Only game I could really see being announced for later this year is 3D Mario. Could be like a Direct reveal in July or August, following by a dedicated direct in September and release in Oct/Nov. A lot of what Nintendo showed off in 2017, as you pointed out, ended up getting delayed past its original planned release. FE & Yoshi were 2018 initially and I'm sure Nintendo didn't think Prime 4 would take until 2025. 3D Mario is the only announcement for 2025 that I'd be expecting because of the anniversary and upcoming movie release.

@zorg1000 Could've sworn there was some discourse about the 3D Mario team developing Peach Showtime. I agree that it is likely that they are the ones working on DK, in line with the rumors and how this game looks. If we don't get 3D Mario until next holiday, I guess it could be a combination of them working on big games + covid delays. I just don't feel like it should take that long for 3D Mario, especially since we'll probably get Pokemon Gen 10 for holiday 2026 (although maybe that will be on NS1 and NS2).

@CaptainExplosion Late 2025 is way too early for Gen 10. That should be holiday 2026. Could see Gen 10 and its DLC being released on both NS1 & NS2. I would say that the next Legends game should be NS2 exclusive, and that should be around 2029.

But I thought this year would be 3 years since Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Aren't new generations of Pokemon usually 3 years apart?

@CaptainExplosion Just because that is usually the case doesn't mean it will be forever. They're releasing ZA this year. It would be crazy to assume they'd release Gen 10 this year as well. They usually only have a 1 year break in a generation, but this gen they had two consecutively for the first time (2023 & 2024), so I think it's clear that this will be a 4 year gen.

Going forward, I see the new pattern being:

Year 1 - New Gen

Year 2 - New Gen DLC

Year 3 - Break or Outsourced Remake (doubt the latter because I believe older main series games will eventually find their way to the eShop).

Year 4 - Legends

Metroid 4 will be the biggest game in years

If Z-A wasn't happening Holiday 2025 or early 2026 would seem perfect for Gen 10.

As it is, I feel like it can't come out until at least Summer 2026, around the time Switch 2 is a year old.

To be honest it seems odd for me that DK Bananza is a July title instead of their holiday title. I feel like if Nintendo's major holiday game was empty as it is now, they would've pushed DK as their holiday title especially if a big developer like the 3D Mario team is working on it. I don't think it would make sense for Nintendo to bank on smaller titles like Kirby Air Riders & Prime 4 as their main games. There is Pokemon Z-A, but its a Switch 1 title too and wouldn't be neccesarily a great Switch 2 system seller just cause of that since Switch 1 owners could already play it.

It almost makes me believe Nintendo does have another big title for the holidays, but at the same time I'm not sure what it could be since it seems like all of Nintendo's big developer's timelines don't match up for a big holiday game. We already know it can't be MK, and if the 3D Mario team worked on DK then it's unlikely they'll have another 3D Mario ready this holiday, Sakurai is working on Air Riders so it can't be Smash 6 either, and its only been 2 years since TOTK so I doubt the Zelda team will have a next Zelda ready this holiday.

The only big titles that I could see happening where the timeline matches up is maybe a new Animal Crossing, maybe Switch Sports 2?? Hard to say.

This could maybe be another holiday where Nintendo just depends on their huge Switch 1 & 2 backlog of games to carry them, Nintendo also seems to have much more 3rd party support this time around so I think that could help fill that gap too.
