Because you make it sound like the Switch only did so well because of the pandemic and people were stuck indoors.

Not at all. All I said was that even with the pandemic significantly boosting sales those years that it wasn't able to sell 6.6m in Japan in a single year to show the lack of realism of the Switch 2 selling that much in its first calendar year since that'll be less than a full year. It was nothing more than saying that even in that unusual circumstance the Switch couldn't do that.

Yes I do agree that it’ll be an unusual circumstance to sell 6.6M units of any console in maybe 6 months. But we are talking about Japan. Japan is a huge supporter of the Switch as 28% of the entire population owns a Switch (if one person owns a Switch). Switch 2 has the followers to be able to make 6.67M a possibility.

I didn’t think you were downplaying. We just out here says the facts (and my opinions of predictions based on facts available).

Hmmm is there a game in Japan that sold over 6M in a year? I think that would be how we should look at this scenario the Switch 2 has.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 160 million (was 120 million, then 140 million, then 150 million)

PS5: 130 million (was 124 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 54 million (was 60 million, then 57 million)

Thats not really true. Here in Austria we could leave the house whenever we wanted. Many measures where just recomendations and the high court skipped them. We where going to covid demos, we even took our Switch systems there and played Mario Kart. Only shops where closed. And that was not 2 years in a row. When protest became too strong they reopened. Our resistance was intense. So the so called "pandemic" was not the only reason why the Switch was sucessfull. There where many lies at that time. Thats why the blue party (the party that resisted the measures most) came to power with close to 30%. The Switch was sucessfull well before the "pandemic" as well. And after this terror ended, Switch did not fell off a cliff.

I disagree that it's a possibility but at this point lets just agree to disagree and see how it goes. I do think the Switch 2 will sell faster than the Switch did for the first three years but not by a massive degree.

Data and charts have been updated with week 5 from Famitsu.

Since the 1st week which ends Jan 4th is included in the data for the last year, as week 53 on VGChartz, and since I adjust my data according to VGChartz, I've made the decision to include that week in 2024, therefore removing it completely from that thread. The numbers for 2024 according to VGChartz (and now my 2024 thread) are 3.22M for the Switch, exactly 1.5M for the PS5, and 116k for the XBSX.

I am not exactly okay with this, but I get why, US and EU reports for December are until 4th January, they include that week as December one, therefore VGChartz has to have the same weeks and months for all regions, therefore the week for Japan is also counted as last year, and December one. I on the other hand adjust the data according to the website, and I want everything to be inline with the data from here. Therefore, that change was necessary.

The Switch is selling on average 45,415 units per week, or ~158k monthly. If this continues until the Switch 2 launches (sometime near June at the earliest) we are looking at 954k by June 30, 2025.

Last year by week 7 the Switch was averaging 64,640 units per week, or 226k monthly. 2025 Switch is selling at a 29.74% decline weekly and a 30.00% decline monthly in comparison to 2024 Switch. Probably the only market of the Switch still holding steady.
