Forums - Sales Discussion - PS5 Ships 65.5 Million Units as of September 2024

About PS2: it was rounded up of course. I mean, if Sony themselfes say "more than 155 million" its hard to believe 160 million or even more. For me official sales from a company count and not some "in memory of" number. 16,5 million PS2 and PS3 where shipped from April 2012- March 31. (PS2 was axed january 13, 2013). We would need the PS3 number for march 31, 2012 and march 31, 2013 for us to figure it out. I mean what if Nintendo released a Game Boy Advance (Micro was the last one) i suppose "In Memory of 83.358.295 produced units"? It would be demo stations, replacements, promotion machines for E3, TGS... But this cannot be counted as a "shipped" unit because like we both know as "colleges", these demo stations get send back to the companies. No way they repack and reship/ resell them, as they are programmed completly differently. They are not for sale/ costumer use. So 81,51 million is the official number no more no less. We do not have official PSP shipments- and like the PS2 we'll probably never know- but its save to say it cracked the 80 million number (although it was never really confirmed officially), but never did it pass the GBA. IF it did Sony sure as hell would not have kept silent about one of the most historic achievements in gaming history: Passing the sales of a NINTENDO HANDHELD (the Game Boy Advance). The Guinness Bock of Records, newspapers, media... everything would be full of it.

Sony need to go out and confirm exact 100% units one every of it's consoles by the last single unit. That's for sure. I don't know why they don't do it.

I hate it to say it but i think Sony is afraid that Switch could get in the area of the PS2, thats why the round up to 160 million. I think its a bit childish. It would be like Nintendo coming with an "in memory of 25,75 million Gamecubes", only to make it look like it just past the Xbox's 24,65 million. Would be childish as well because we all know it where 21,74 million, no more no less. If i was a tax agency i would come for such companies and take a closer look: You need to pay tax for every sold system because it generates income. IF you say you solld 155,1 million appels and 11 years later you "correct" the number to 160 million (thats a freakin' 5 million!!) it seems like the company sold them iligally, without paying taxes for it. And thats something a company big as Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft cannot do and they won't. Thats why Ryan's comment is useless for me, like Laydon's. I still believe he printed that number on his personal PSP. For little money i can do the same in a copyshop with any system i want.

Nintendo does not compete with either Sony or Microsoft.

You can in fact say the Wii beat the PS3 and 360 and the Switch beat the PS4 and XBO based on system sales, you can compare them like that, yes.

Now, the important part, they still never competed, the Wii or Switch success did not affect the other system sales, both still sold 170M+ units combined, those two on the other hand compete directly, and one being up means the other being down, like the Football example you gave, for one to win the other has to lose, that's not the case at all with Nintendo.

Nintendo platforms do not receive the modern new game releases, the vast majority of people will not consider either the Switch or another platform, they either want to have both or they only get Nintendo and indie/older games, basically excluding themselves from most new game releases. They can still only care for Nintendo games, usually happens to younger people or people getting systems as gifts, and they proceed to get another system (be either PC, Playstation or Xbox) later on if they plan to get access to most modern games.

Sony and Microsoft were directly competing for where do people want to play the new releases from the industry aside from a PC (PC does not canibalize console sales, at least not yet), they are into the Greece vs Portugal situation, actually even past that as Microsoft accepted they can not compete directly with Sony and are moving to a subscription based model and even porting their own exclusive games to Playstation. Maybe none will be truly into competition next gen.

Nobody said that the Game Boy was no competition to the Game Gear. Nobody said the Mega Drive and the SNES where not in direct competition. When the DS trounced the PSP or the 3DS outsold the Vita, nobody said "different audience". Its not about the games. Its about the audience. The audience are gamers who care for physical games. This is why i can understand why we do not take into account PC and Mobile. I wrote a thesis over games. And the correcting staff had no problem when i mentioned that the Wii and the Xbox 360/ PS3 where in direct competition. To me this seems to be downplaying the winner because the looser(s) cannot accept defeat.

"There were a total of 77.7 million games sold on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 for the quarter. This is up 10.1 million from 67.6 million during the same period a year earlier. Digital sales accounted for 70 percent of software sales"

I'm sure Xbox digital ratio is even bigger given the number of Series S sold. Your point about console audience leaning heavily towards physical is misplaced, console owners are moving own to digital for quite a while. PCs are as much competition for PS5 and Series X/S as Switch, because they share the same games even more now Sony is releasing their first party on PC

Also, doesn't matter how things were prior to Nintendo Wii. The industry changed and so did customers habits.  Switch being a portable means they have a unique feature other consoles don't have thus not in competition with any other major console, at least for people who specifically needs a handheld device

Of course the best way to understand how this works is: Different groups of people are wanting and expecting specific features and games. In Japan please who wants to play third party Japanese games (mostly not AAA) Nintendo and Sony compete directly. For Japanese people who needs handhelds specifically, Switch and PS5 don't compete

What kind of idiocy is that

@IcaroRibeiro
If one company does not want to offer something that the competition has its not their problem. I mean in Japan PS5 and Switch compete but in the west they don't?! I mean look at movies: It's like saying that in in japan all animated movies compete with Horror, Action and anime, but in europe anime movies are no competition? Only because their biggest audience sits in Japan, where it suddenly is? Or Action movies do not compete with horror movies because of "different audiences"? I don't think so. At the Game Awards there are many cathegories. Many games from many consoles compete with each other. In 2021 Metroid Dread became GOTY if i am not mistaken. There where also games nominated, wich where on Playstation and Xbox. So here these games and systems get compared but here on vgchartz its "forbidden"?

If two devices have different features and those key features are what people look for then they are competing for the same market (read the same pool of customers)

Otherwise they are not. If someone is looking specifically for a handheld then there is no competition between PS5 and Switch, the competition would be between something like Switch and Steam Deck

Likewise, if what someone is looking for a machine to play third parties then PS5 and Switch are competing, as long those third parties are shared between both consoles, which is not the case for most of western AAA

Wii U and PS4 were more directly competition than PS5 and Switch, Switch is competing with PS5 yes, but they don't share exactly the same pool of customers. It's different from MS and Sony, those 2 are fighting for almost exclusively the same audience

Very good explanation. The same thing I have been trying to tell everyone.

If GTAVI launches in 2025, there will be a gap of 12 years between the last main GTA and the new one.

GTA4 and GTA V launched on the same gen. Suggesting that GTAVI won't sell a ton of systems is disingenuous to say the least.

GTA 6 is launching 2026. I bet on it.

Inflation, lack of price cuts, PC gaming on the rise (more expensive but an open platform), Switch's success (doesn't matter but it IS a direct competitor), less cross-gen titles shared between PS3 and PS4 than now, and PS4 Pro launching a year earlier aligned than PS5 Pro.

With all those barriers, it's impressive that PS5 is only about 2.2 million behind. If it ends up 5-10 million units behind, it would still be a big success and possibly more profitable still.

Corrected that for you. Only because a prefered system will not get to the LTD sales of another does not make it a "non competitior". Xbox, Playstation and Switch are competitiors.

PS4 was direct competition to the Wii U. Currently Switch is leading the PS5 but that's because it's been out longer but I don't think the gap will be larger than 100 million like the PS4 and Wii U
