Forums - Nintendo Discussion - TotK really makes Switch feel dated

So fusing a bomb to a rocket is good combat to you? I Mean to each his own but I'm talking about skill bases combat in botw the combat is very simple and boring

Can you do in any game? And that requires mad skill

Combat is more than reflexes it's also about tactics and game theory which TOTK excels heavily in due to mechanics like fusion. Fusion allows players to micro manage gameplay interactions in combat an example is fusing weapons like the eightfold that fires air slashes with elemental items such as lightning based items, the resulting interaction is a weapon that fires lightning which can be used further in interactions for example you throw a water chu jelly at an enemy group then use the said weapon to fire out a lightning slash and cause an aoe lightning spike.

Another example is fusing elements to shields meaning enemies who have their attacks blocked or parried have to deal with the interaction, enemies of the opposite element are even insta killed, one more example is fusing a boomerang or even a load of them with different items and elements and doing the boomerang trick by throwing all of them in quick succession above your head causing them to circle you to create a pseudo barrier around yourself with the said barrier carrying a host of interactions.

I have to play the game. in BOTW  it was average at best. maybe fusing will make it more interesting.

I think TotK has a good combat system in that it is possible to play the game by just button mashing, but it is also possible to engage in battle more strategically. So you can kind of do it however you want, and switch back and forth based on what you feel like doing at the time.

I do wish there was a better ranged combat option. The bow, at least so far, is really only usable from pretty close up.

Mashing in TOTK is not a good idea tbh as while you can do it the result is you getting killed over and over as anything more than a base level Bokoblin does insane damage as in like seven to eight hearts of damage minimum and they have a tendency to tank hits so trying to stagger them with mashing is not consistent. Strategic approach to combat is really a must especially against groups as Link's defence took a severe nerf in TOTK.

Well, I button mash probably 60% of the time.  Seems to be working pretty well for me.  For what I expect to be tough battles, I fight more strategically.

The thing is, while the graphics may not be high end, the game is actually an incredible technical achievement in terms of how big and complex it is while remaining almost entirely free of glitches and jank.
A lot of people in the industry are blown away by how Nintendo was able to pull this off, so it's arguable that in terms of design, the game is cutting edge.

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023. (And over 130 million lifetime)

Goodness. All of this talk about combat and graphics and I’m just blown away by how open ended much of the puzzle system is. If you think you can solve a puzzle a certain way, you can. Doesn’t make the Switch feel dated, it makes it feel like a timeless instrument that Nintendo is playing like a virtuoso.

I just got a ps5 2 months ago and stopped playing on ps4 mainly for like 7 months cause I didn't wanna play at 30/1080p anymore. My roommate doesn't use his switch and I can buy the game and sell after I finish it but I haven't even played elden ring yet lol or resident evil 4 remake. I'll get in a get during black Friday I guess. I do really want to try it. I did enjoy a botw very fun game 9 out 10 for me. Just not sure how it's gonna feel go back 30fps/720p I played bioshock Infiniti and holy shit the does it feel dated and ugly

Actually, should we in future call games dated, that don't employ the scope and ability to creatively combine your resources you see in TotK? Because you could say that is the new industry standard.

I agree with both of these comments. And, that's why I said in the OP that TotK makes the *Switch* feel dated.  The hardware is holding the game back, possibly pretty significantly, depending on how much one values great graphics. Many aspects of the game are a step, in some cases many steps, above most of the rest of the industry. But, the hardware is causing the graphics to be a couple of steps behind. Presumably, with more modern hardware, the graphics would also be great.
