Considering that without Japan, Sony sold 105+ Million units of PS4’s and more than 1.4 BILLION games, it’s clear that their focus is not Japan anymore.

They may say that they are trying for that ship sailed long time ago with the PS2.

Japanese market it's not only the Japanese market.

Sony has an ok run there with Ps4 because all third-party AAA/AA is on Ps4,  and 3ds ( japan only) and WiiU( biggest mainline Nintendo flop) don't represent much competition. Now we have the Switch dominance and the loss of a big chunk of AA production, and some unusual comeback (Konami). The second biggest market has an influence on all East Asia markets. Look at Taiwan and South Korea tracks now... resembles the Japanese market( South Korea is a Nintendo more version of this). Continental China Nintendo has more than 4 million sales there.

I believe Sony will grow in India. but lose some chunks of East Asia.

Square will keep Sony relevant in Japan, also most big Japanese games/franchises tend to get released on PS5/Xbox/PC, or as PS5/PC exclusive like Devil May Cry, mainline Final Fantasy games, mainline Resident Evil games and others. But 10 million units is probably the ceiling for a Sony Console in Japan nowadays. But Europe and USA make up for that by a lot.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Nowadays even RotW kinda dwarf Japan.

20 million PS4’s against 9.4 millions in Japan can conform it.

I'd say it would be better to add all consoles in a gen together and check the numbers then, as this could be very skewed otherwise.

FYI, even the PS2 sold more RotW than in Japan, as did the PS3. Playstation consoles selling well in RotW are nothing new, though the gap between Japan and RotW has been rising with the PS4 for sure.

For Xbox, it's easy, RotW wins. It's Japan sales are so abysmal it's actually hard not to beat them.

On the Nintendo side of things, in the past, Nintendo never managed to make big strides into the RotW markets. Right now, the DS is the best-selling Nintendo console in the RotW, and with 12.43M, it is far behind the bestselling consoles in that region and far behind it's sales in Japan.

But now with the Switch, they're selling there big time. Switch is only 1M behind the DS and PS3 here anymore, which should be gobbled up during this summer. From there, only the top 3 consoles are left to beat in that region, which are PSP, PS4 and finally PS2, in that order. And while the PS2 might be too much, beating the other 2 Sony consoles should be very possible

With Nintendo finally selling well in RotW, I'd say that yes, now it has surpassed Japan. But before that, I would argue that it wasn't the case yet, and it's only really the case since 2020, where Nintendo's sales in that region really took off and outsold the 3 previous years combined.

The Switch wont even match the 3DS sales in Japan(most likely) and it will never reach DS or gameboy numbers, handheld market in Japan shrinking isn't a myth it's a fact.

We'll see about that. I certainly expect the Switch to outsell 3DS and then some. It's around 2 mil behind in Japan launch aligned, but while the 3DS had already peaked at that point, Switch sales are still on rise.

Ofc the handheld market will never again reach anything as ridicolous as the seventh gen with 33 mil DS's + 20 mil PSPs but that was a wholly unique case. The 3DS + Vita did almost as much as the Gameboy and that was stretched over 2 gens.

Totally agree, I think it's got a good chance to beat DS also, keeping in mind the variance in price between both machines

Well tbh, i am loosing interest in consoles because I can't bloody get one in Aus lol. Would love to get a PS5 but not easy to find.

Started reading about computers and monitors alone gave me a headache with so many options. From my reading I have concluded a serious gamer probably needs at least two monitors, one for FPS and one for immersive games lol. Maybe a 3rd for something else lol.

Thanks to Media Create Top 1000 for Japan and South Korea/Taiwan data which we got thanks to Chris, we can see that the overall software situation in Asia for the PS5 is far from rosy at the moment

Considering that at the moment sales on the PS4/PS5 in Japan for this year are likely below 500K I can see a situation where sales on the PS4/PS5 fail to surpass 2 million units for the year which would mean a decline of over 5 million units YoY. If a similar trend is observed in South Korea & Taiwan we can definitely say that there is a divergence between East and West in terms of dedicated video game market. Considering China is fast become the biggest growth opportunity for video game makers, this might be giving us hints about what the Chinese market will look like in the coming years as culturally it's closer to Japan/South Korea/Taiwan than the West.

Also if you are an Asian video game maker and aren't making Switch part of your strategy you are missing a big opportunity.

Those are terrible numbers for South Korea and Taiwan with all platforms including the Switch.

All top 1000 titles together in South Korea for the whole year sell less than eg the latest COD game sells in the USA on just its opening day.

Wow!!!! I knew they didn't really buy Consoles but didn't think it was that bad, they still really are just PC & Mobile
